The Zsigmondy/Palmer notation for the permanent
dentition is a four quadrant symbolic system , in which
beginning with central incisor , the teeth are numbered 1
through 8 in each arch .

The palmer notation for the entire permanent dentition is as
follows :

for example :right maxillary first molar is designated as 6
And left mandibular central incisor as 1




It was introduced by ADA in 1968 .
Universal system notation for entire primary dentition is as follow :

EXAMPLE :: maxillary teeth beginning with right second molar
use letters A through J

For the mandibular teeth , letters K through T , beginning with left
mandibular second molar

For permanent dentition , the maxillary teeth are numbered from 1
through 16 beginning with right third molar .

Beginning with mandibular left third molar , teeth are numbered
17 through 32 .

Thus the right maxillary first molar is designated as 3 , the
maxillary left central incisor is 9

The following universal notation designates the entire
permanent dentition:

A two- digit system proposed by Federation Dentaire
International[FDI] for both the primary and permanent dentitions
has been adopted by WHO and accepted by other organizations
such as IADR [International Association For Dental Research ]

FDI system of tooth notation for primary teeth is as follows

Numeral 5 indicates maxillary right and 6 indicates maxillary
left side.

The second no. of two digit no. is the tooth no.for each side.

The no. 8 indicates mandibular right and 7 indicates
mandibular left side .

e.g. 51 refers to maxillary right primary central incisor ..


The FDI system of tooth notation for permanent dentition is as
follows ::

First digit indicates the quadrant [1 to 4] for permanent
dentition and for primary dentition [5 to 8]..

e.g. Permanent upper right central incisor is 11 ..
[ pronounced as one-one , not eleven ]
