BCET's 3 Year Presents

1. Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and carbon tetrachloride are bubbled through molten antimony pentachloride catalyst in a steam-jacketed reactor at 65-95°C to produce fluorocarbons. 2. The gaseous mixture is distilled, with unreacted chlorocarbons recycled to the reactor and fluorocarbons collected. 3. The reactions are slightly endothermic and produce dichlorodifluoromethane or monochlorotrifluoromethane depending on the amount of hydrogen fluoride used.

Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and carbon

tetrachloride (or chloroform) are bubbled
through molten antimony pentachloride catalyst.
These reactions are slightly endothermic and
take place in a steam-jacketed atmospheric
pressure reactor at 65 to 95o C.
