THEORIES ON MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION Cultural pluralism regarded that each ethnic and cultural group is important and that their unique contributions add to the variety and richness of culture. It allow for some degree of cultural diversity within the confines of a unified national experience ( Horace Kallen, 1999)
PHILOSOPHY OF MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION Multicultural education will serve as a catalyst of learning that promotes anti racist basic education for all students which characterized by critical approaches to learning grounded in principles of equality, mutual respect, acceptance and understanding, and moral commitment to social justice WHAT IS CULTURAL EDUCATION? A reform movement that changes all components of the educational enterprise, including its underlying values, procedural rules, curricula, instructional materials and organizational structure. KEY PRINCIPLES OF MULTI CULTURAL EDUCATION A personally empowering, socially transformative, and pedagogically humanistic process Correcting and rehabilitating some of the mistakes that schools have made in educating culturally different children, especially those of color and poverty Fundamentally an affective and humanistic enterprise that aims to achieve greater understanding and appreciation of diverse culture and people. For the students in all grade level, subjects and school setting A bridge for making meaningful connections between the abstractions of schooling and the actual life experiences of ethnically and culturally different students UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY Culture takes diverse forms across time and space. This diversity is embodied in the uniqueness and plurality of the identities of the groups and societies making up humankind. As a source of exchange, innovation and creativity, cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature. In this sense, it is the common heritage of humanity and should be recognized and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations(UNESCO-article 1) THE GOAL OF MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION 1. The primary goal of multicultural education is to promote the education and achievement of the students, particularly those who are traditionally dismissed and underserved in our education system ( Allison Cumming Mc Cann ) The major goals of multicultural education cover all three domains of learning such as cognitive, affective and actions and these fall into seven (7) general clusters incorporating both intrinsic and instrumental values of multicultural education
Developing ethnic and cultural literacy Personal development Attitudes and values clarification Multicultural social competence Basic skill proficiency Educational equity and excellence Personal empowerment for social reform
APPROACHES ON MULTI CULTURAL EDUCATION The Contributions Approach commonly referred to as the heroes and holidays approach. It is characterized by the addition of ethnic heroes in the existing curriculum by using criteria similar to those used to select mainstream heroes
The Additive Approach sometimes called as the ethnic additive approach, this one allows the teacher to put content into the curriculum without restructuring it.
Approaches on multicultural education The Transformative Approach it enables students to see concepts from several cultural and ethnic perspectives. It requires the infusion of perspectives, frames of reference, and ideas that will expand students understanding of an idea The Decision Making and Social Action Approach this approach requires that students ( not only explore and understand the dynamics ) must participate to decision making and to take action related to the concept, issue or problem they have studied RACISM BIGOTRY PREJUDISM ETHNICITY SEXISM STEREOTYPING CULTURE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK MULTI CULTURAL EDUCATION UNITY IN DIVERSITY PROS AND CONS OF MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION It helps both teachers and students to face the ever changing challenge of interacting and communicating with diverse races It can help eliminate the crux of stereotyping, prejudice, racism and bigotry Will enhance feelings of being atypical May increase the resentment encountered by students who feel that changes in school traditions, curriculum, and academic standards are not necessary to get along and respect students from ethnic minorities
