A Little Quiz
Your success in your work and in
life is largely determined by your
Adversity Quotient (AQ)
What is an AQ?
According to Dr. Paul Stoltz, is about how you
respond to life, especially the tough stuff. It is a
gauge or measure of how you respond and deal
with everything, from everyday hassles to the big
adversities that life can spring on you. It is also an
established science, theory, and approach for
becoming measurably more resilient. The more
resilient you are, the more effectively and
constructively you respond to lifes difficulties,
and the more fulfilling life becomes.

AQ is divided into 3 stages: Quitters,
Campers, and Climbers.
Now, look at your quiz and review
your score.
Quitters
Quitters see a mountain and give up. These are people who face
lifes adversity and opt out, cop out, back out, and drop out. They
see the mountain and abandon the climb. They abandon their
dreams and take the easier path. Quitters use the language of
limitationwords like cant, wont, and impossible and
phrases like Weve always done it that way, Its not fair, That
will not work, and Im too young, old, fat, skinny, tall, short,
weak, male, or female.
Quitters are those who stop at:
The first disappointment
Their first presentation and the prospect says no
Their own excuse of This isnt really for me because things got
uncomfortable.
The embarrassment of not succeeding right out of the starting
blocks, and its not likely they will ever come back to it.
Campers
Campers see a mountain and settle down. These people start the climb but
become weary and look for a smooth, comfortable plateau on which to avoid
adversity. They focus their energy on filling their tents with material goods and
settle into a convenient and comfortable lifestyle. They usually have decent
jobs with good pay and benefits; however, their days of excitement, learning,
growth, and creativity are long gone. By waiting out the storm, they wait out life
and succumb to the gravitational pull of the campground.
Campers are those who:
Have had some success, perhaps even significant success, but have run up
against a wall
They need to rest for awhile OR they need to fall back and regroup/rethink
their approach
Perhaps they have met their goals and have not set new ones (so they are
stagnating)
The good news is campers can start climbing again anytime they choose!
Climbers
These are the folks that are destined for the
top.
They let nothing stop them.
In life, climbers are those that no matter how
many times they fail, they will pick
themselves up and try again.
You possess all forms of
intelligence to varying degrees.
In other words you have everything
that you need right now to be
successful.
According to a poll of more than
150,000 leaders across all industries
worldwide, many people quit (5 to 20
percent), most camp (65 to 90
percent), and a rare few climb. In fact,
when leaders are asked, "What
percentage of your workforce is
camping?" the most common response
is "80 percent

You always control how you
respond to any event in your life.
Nothing has meaning except the
meaning you assign to it.
Negative criticism sticks, especially
when we are the ones criticizing
ourselves.
97% of women have at least 1
negative body thought a day.
"I realized early on that success
was tied to not giving up. Most
people in this business gave up and
went on to other things. If you
simply didn't give up, you would
outlast the people who came in on
the bus with you."
~ Harrison Ford
Each child (human) must develop
the ability to turn obstacles into
opportunities.
How to build your AQ?
Here are 10 tips for improving your adversity
quotient:
1.Be a Detective. As difficult situations arise, immediately
pinpoint at least one facet of the situation you can influence, if
not control.
2.Be a Lawyer. Silently or vocally question people who say,
Well, theres nothing we can do about it. Find specific ways to
prove them wrong. Prove your case with real evidence.
3.Be a Judge. If you feel you lack control over a given situation,
try to be impartial in your assessment. Base your judgment only
on facts.
4. Be a Pioneer. Be the first to take ownership of difficult
situations, whether or not you were the cause. Pick your
moment and step into the wilderness of responsibility by
declaring your accountability and intended action.
5. Be an Opportunist. Ask yourself what will definitely happen as
a result of a given situation within the next 24 to 48 hours. Pick
those outcomes for which you feel most compelled to take
ownership and action.
6. Be a Firefighter. When adversity strikes, immediately contain
the blaze by acting with urgency to prevent it from affecting
other areas of your life. Hose down emotional brushfires as they
pop up.
7. Be a Surgeon. As difficulties arise, prevent them from bleeding
into other areas of your business, relationships, and life by
surgically clamping the damaged artery and operating on or even
removing damaged tissue.
8. Be a Visionary. No matter how severe a setback may be,
imagine life after it has passed. Force yourself to rise above and
see beyond the adversity. Paint a mental picture of how life is
different now that adversity is history.
9. Be an Accountant. Create a balance sheet, indicating on one
side the likely result of adversity over which you have no control,
feel no ownership, and which is far-reaching and long-lasting. On
the other side, put the implications of adversity over which you
feel a certain amount of control, strong ownership, and which
you see as limited and short-lived..
10. Be a Catalyst. Take even the smallest constructive action to
regain control, to take ownership, or to limit the reach or
endurance of the adversity, and you will immediately begin to
see it shrink.

breeds confidence and courage. If you
want to conquer fear, do not sit home
and think about it. Go out and get
