Micro Soft Table

Microsoft Surface is a multi-touch product that allows users to interact with digital content through natural hand gestures and physical objects placed on the interactive tabletop surface. The technology behind it uses infrared cameras and projectors to turn the acrylic tabletop into a touchscreen. Initial launch partners plan to use Surface in hotels, restaurants, and retail stores to help customers view options and make selections. Though early consumer versions cost $5,000-$10,000 per unit, Microsoft expects prices to drop enough for home use by 2010.

Microsoft - Surface

A Mistery - A New Dimension

“Think Beyond You Can Think”

management, Pune (2008-10)
Microsoft Surface….woow!!!
Do you know…what it is exactly?
 Microsoft Surface (Codename: Milan), is a Multi-touch
product from Microsoft which is developed as a
software and hardware combination technology that
allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital
content by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or
physical objects.

 The product behind the Milan project is called the Microsoft
Surface, and the company's unofficial Surface showman is
Jeff Gattis.

Microsoft Surface
 The name Surface comes from "surface computing,"
and Microsoft envisions the coffee-table machine as
the first of many such devices.
 Surface computing uses a blend of wireless protocols,
special machine-readable tags and shape recognition
to seamlessly merge the real and the virtual world —
an idea the Milan team refers to as "blended reality.“
 The table can be built with a variety of wireless
transceivers, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and
(eventually) radio frequency identification (RFID).

We can drag things with our fingers. We can also “dipped” our all
fingers into the screen to get a smiley face on our table.
……………………..great isn’t??
What is the History…& launch time?
 It was announced on May 29, 2007 at D5 conference.

 The preliminary launch was on April 17, 2008, when
Surface became available for customer use in AT&T
stores.

 It has at least a 25-year history,beginning in 1982, with

pioneering work being done at the University of Toronto
(multi-touch tablets) and Bell Labs (multi-touch screens).

 The product idea for Surface was initially conceptualized in
2001 by Steven Bathiche of Microsoft Hardware and Andy
Wilson of Microsoft Research.

 In October 2001, a virtual team was formed with Bathiche

and Wilson as key members, to bring the idea to the next
stage of development.

Howzz….it?? Hmm!!
Technology…behind the surface?
“God knows”
 The technology behind Surface is called Multi-touch.

 Microsoft Surface applications can be written in Windows

Presentation Foundation or XNA. The development
process is much like normal Vista development, but
custom WPF controls had to be created by the Surface
team due to the unique interface of Surface.

 Surface has no cables or external USB ports for plugging in
peripherals. For that matter, it has no keyboard, no mouse,
no trackball — no obvious point of interaction except its
screen
It’s not a Dinning but Microsoft Table
Like a magic trick
 It’s an interesting product in that it’s completely out of left
field.
 Microsoft gives examples of ordering a beverage during a
meal with just the tap of a finger and quickly browsing
through music and dragging favorite songs onto a
personal playlist by moving a finger across the screen.
 Build this into a bar and you’d get one-touch beer service
although I’m not sure if they’ve found a way to work out
when your beer glass is empty so replenishment becomes
automatic, maybe in a later version.

& Magic continues…

 A Surface computer is able to recognize physical objects

from a paintbrush to a cell phone and allows hands-on,
direct control of content such as photos, music and maps.
Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a dynamic surface
that provides interaction with all forms of digital content
through natural gestures, touch and physical objects.

No use of Atlas any more…go here
Parts of that Table:

 Screen.

 Infrared.

 CPU.

 Projector.
Have a look…..first !!
Lets cut it part…1 by 1
 (1) Screen: A diffuser turns the Surface's acrylic tabletop
into a large horizontal "multitouch" screen, capable of
processing multiple inputs from multiple users. The
Surface can also recognize objects by their shapes or by
reading coded "domino" tags.

 2) Infrared: Surface's "machine vision" operates in the near-
infrared spectrum, using an 850-nanometer-wavelength
LED light source aimed at the screen. When objects touch
the tabletop, the light reflects back and is picked up by
multiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x
960.
Cutting continues…

 (3) CPU: Surface uses many of the same components found
in everyday desktop computers — a Core 2 Duo processor,
2GB of RAM and a 256MB graphics card. Wireless
communication with devices on the surface is handled
using WiFi and Bluetooth antennas (future versions may
incorporate RFID or Near Field Communications). The
underlying operating system is a modified version of
Microsoft Vista.
Just One more cut….

 4) Projector: Microsoft's Surface uses the same DLP light
engine found in many rear-projection HDTVs. The
footprint of the visible light screen, at 1024 x 768 pixels, is
actually smaller than the invisible overlapping infrared
projection to allow for better recognition at the edges of
the screen
Specifications…”bit terrible”
 Surface is a 30-inch (76 cm) display in a table-like form
factor, 22 inches (56 cm) high, 21 inches (53 cm)
deep, and 42 inches (107 cm) wide.

 The Surface tabletop is acrylic, and its interior frame is
powder-coated steel. The software platform runs on a
custom version of Windows Vista and has wired
Ethernet 10/100, wireless 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth
2.0 connectivity.

 Surface applications are written using either Windows
Presentation Foundation or Microsoft XNA
technology.

Under microsoft…
 At Microsoft's MSDN Conference, Bill Gates told
developers of "Maximum" setup the Microsoft Surface
was going to have:

 Intel Core Quad Xeon "WoodCrest" @ 2.66GHz.

 4GB DDR2-1066 RAM.
 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive.
 It has a custom motherboard form factor about the size of
two ATX motherboards.
Just one touch….Boss!!!
Features…”a bag of surprise”
 Microsoft notes four main components being important in
Surface's interface:

 direct interaction.

 multi-touch contact.

 multi-user experience.

 object recognition.

Features…unfolded - 1
 Direct interaction refers to the user's ability to simply reach
out and touch the interface of an application in order to
interact with it, without the need for a mouse or keyboard.

 Multi-touch contact refers to the ability to have multiple

contact points with an interface, unlike with a mouse,
where there is only one cursor
Features…unfolded - 2

 Multi-user is a benefit of multi-touch -- several people can
orient themselves on different sides of the surface to
interact with an application simultaneously.

 Object recognition refers to the device's ability to recognize
the presence and orientation of tagged objects placed on
top of it.

 The technology allows non-digital objects to be used as

input devices

Super…table – its microsoft table
Who are the initiators…
Initial launch partners include :

 Harrah’s Entertainment.

 Starwood Hotels.

 T-Mobile.
How heavy on our pocket??...uff!!

 Prices will reportedly be $5,000 to $10,000 per unit.

 However Microsoft said it expects prices to drop enough to

make consumer versions feasible in 2010.

But where do we gonna use it??
 People will see it in public spaces like bars and
restaurants and want to expand it into other
environments.

 Its migration as similar to that of plasma TVs.

 Partner companies plan to use the Surface in their
hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. The Surface is to
be used to choose meals at restaurants, plan vacations
and spots to visit from the hotel room.

Use is running successfully…

 Starwood Hotels plan to allow users to drop a credit card on
the table to pay for music, books, and other amenities
offered at the resort.

 In AT&T stores, use of the Surface include interactive

presentations of plans, coverage, and phone features, in
addition to dropping two different phones on the table and
having the customer be able to view and compare prices,
features, and plans

thanks to you all & Microsoft Surface…!!
