29

Qualitative Techniques
Objectives of exploration are accomplished both by
qualitative & quantitative techniques, however
exploration relies more on qualitative techniques.
Approaches to Qualitative Research are adopted for
exploratory investigations:
Individual in depth interviews (usually conversational
than structured)
Participant observation (their experiences)
Films, photographs & videotapes ( life of the group
under study)
Psychological testing ( games, role plays)
Case study (in depth understanding of events /
conditions)
Elite / expert interviewing ( influential/ well informed
people in system)
Document analysis

1.1 Secondary Data Analysis

First step in exploratory study
It is inefficient to discover anew through the collection
of primary data or original research, what has already
been done & reported at a level sufficient for
management to make a decision.
First start with Cos own data archives
Reveals prior decision- making patterns, successful/
unsuccessful methodologies, avoids duplication of
effort where prior collected data can provide sufficient
info for the current dilemma.
Refer to data published by authors outside the Co.
helps what needs to be done
e.g. special catalogs, subject guides, electronic
sources
BRM Prof Purshottam Patil 2014-15

32

1.2 Experience Survey

Limitations of secondary data: fraction of existing knowledge is put

in writing1, it may be proprietary to an organization & hence
unavailable to outside person2.
Experience surveys seek info from persons experienced in the
related area.
We can explore various avenues during interview:
What is being done?
What has been tried with/out success?
How have things changed?
Who is the decision maker & what role does each person play?
What are the costs of processes under study?
What are the priority areas?
e.g. Study of TVS Motors assembly unit: history of declining
productivity, increasing costs & growing no. of quality defects.
People who may provide insightful info.: Employees recently
transferred to unit, marginal individuals as first line supervisors

1.3 Focus Groups

Most widely used Qualitative Research
Methodology
Group of 6-10 participants lead by a trained
moderator , meet for 90-120 minutes
Moderator facilitates & guides group in
exchange of ideas, & experiences on specific
topic.
Objective of Focus Group maybe: new
product or concept, new employee
motivation program, improve blood donations
at blood banks, etc
