Temperature sensors are devices used to measure temperature in control systems. They have various applications including maintaining temperatures in chemical reactors, monitoring for runaway reactions, and minimizing environmental impacts of released streams. There are two main types of contact temperature sensors: resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) which measure temperature electrically based on resistance, and thermocouples, the most widely used industrial sensor, which also provide electrical temperature measurements based on thermoelectric effects. Both RTDs and thermocouples are used across industries such as manufacturing, steel production, and process plants to monitor and control temperatures.

TEMPERATURE SENSOR

Temperature is an important parameter in many

control systems
Temperature sensors are devices used to measure

the temperature of the medium

Some Uses and Applications

Household ovens
Refrigerators
Thermostat

For Chemical engineering application:

It is used to maintain the temperature of the chemical
reactor at the set-point
To monitor the temperature of a possible runaway
reaction to ensure the safety of employees
Maintaining the temperature of streams released to the
environment to minimize harmful impact

Kinds of Temperature Sensors

1.

Contact sensors
Contact temperature sensors measure the
temperature of the object to which the sensor is in
contact by assuming or knowing that the two
(sensor and the object) are in thermal equilibrium,
in other words, there is no heat flow between them.

Types of Contact Temperature sensors

Thermometers

Thermometers are the most common

temperature sensors encountered in simple,
everyday measurements of temperature

Resistance Temperature Detector

A second commonly used temperature sensor is

the resistance temperature detector (RTD, also
known as resistance thermometer). Unlike filled
system thermometers, the RTD provides an electrical
means of temperature measurement, thus making it
more convenient for use with a computerized system.
An RTD utilizes the relationship between electrical
resistance and

Thermocouples

Another temperature sensor often used in

industry is the thermocouple. Among the various
temperature sensors available, the thermocouple is
the most widely used sensor. Similar to the RTD, the
thermocouple provides an electrical measurement of
temperature.

Application of Thermocouple
Steel industry

Monitor temperature and chemistry throughout

the steel making process
Heating appliance safety

Thermocouples in fail-safe mode are used in

ovens and water heaters to detect if pilot flame is
burning to prevent fire and health hazard

Manufacturing

Used for testing prototype electrical and

mechanical apparatus
Process plants

Chemical production plants and refineries use

computer programs to view the temperature at
various locations. For this situation, a number of
thermocouple leads are brought to a common
reference block.
