Monitoring System For A Photovoltaic Installation

Data acquisition systems (DAS) are extensively used in solar energy installations (SEI). Data are collected in order to forecast the system behavior for the following days, to evaluate its future capacity, to manage the energy, etc. This work describes the development of a sensor conditioning electronics for a computer-based data acquisition system in order to control the SEI and to save its parameters. The proposed system monitors a set of sensors which measure three parameters: solar irradiation, ambient temperature, photovoltaic cell temperature. The sensors output signals are conditioned using electronic circuits then connected to a PC by means of a data acquisition (DAQ) card. As LabVIEW development environment offers performance and flexibility by its programming language, as well as high-level functionality and configuration utilities designed specifically for measurement and automation applications, it is used to design the monitoring interface.

4

Shortcoming of the existing DAS

The data logging unit cannot save the historical values of the solar
irradiation

Laboratory researches are based on the historical values of the

PVP parameters

The data logging unit lacks flexibility

This flexibility in DASs is highly required in a laboratory where

many different approaches of research are carried out
5

Project specifications

Development of a DAS capable of saving the acquired data

each one minute on daily log files;

These log files should be able to be read by Microsoft Excel;
Design of a harmonious graphic interface that displays clearly

the target parameters;

User should be able visualize the saved data and the line

chart of the measured parameters from the graphic interface.

Data acquisition (DAQ)

card
The chosen DAQ card is KUSB-3108 for various reasons:
The input resolution of the KUSB-3108 module is 16 bits;
The card is linked to PC by USB port;
The full scale of the cards ADC is configurable for each

channel;
The card supports 8 differential analog input channels;
The card provides 2 analog output channels;
The sampling frequency is 50 KHz, the maximum
frequency of the input signals is 25 KHz (Shannon
theorem).

Programming software
The purposes of having appropriate
software are:
Acquiring data in the background while processing

in foreground;
Acquiring data at specified sampling rate;
Developing the graphic interface

(monitoring&saving)
10

LabVIEW 8.6
It uses a data graphical programming language where

the processing can be controlled using block diagrams

and front panels;
Developed programs are called Virtual Instruments

(VI)
It offers high-level functionalities designed specifically

for measurement and automating applications;

It can create executable from any operational VI
11

DT-LV Link
Library of Virtual Instruments (VIs) provided with the

KUSB module
It gives programmers working in LabVIEW the ability to
access KUSB card.

Data logging
Data logging consists on storing each 1 min the

acquired data in a log file having the corresponding

date as name.
The storing action consists on creating a new line in
TDMS file where:
the first case is devoted to the exact time of storage
the second case is devoted to the order of the stored
line
the other 3 cases are devoted to store the three
acquired parameters.
When the date changes another log file will be

created with the new date as a filename.
