Research Topic: Optimisation of Offshore Wind Turbine Supporting Structures

This document outlines research on optimizing the supporting structures for offshore wind turbines. The research aims to derive equations that can accurately predict the stress-fatigue relationship of tubular steel joints. The objectives are to model an existing offshore wind turbine, identify limitations in design codes, conduct simulations and analysis on typical joints, and validate results. Present work includes quantifying wind loads on turbine blades using software, and evaluating stresses on a T-joint using shell and solid elements in a simulation. Future work will involve defining structural load flow and expanding numerical simulations and analysis.

Concept of Wind Turbine and

Relevance

Industrial Demand/Challenge
Relating demands perspective to structural
integrity;
Deeper depth which requires more steel, thus
construction becomes heavier. Slenderness of
the structure in regards to structural response
becomes a critical design issue
Higher demand for energy requires bigger
turbines, thereby more structural load on the
wind turbine supporting structures

Research Motivation Limitations on Codes and

Standards

Research Motivation Limitations on Codes and

Standards

Eurocode limitations Similar to CIDECT

Yield strength < 460 N/mm2,
Nominal tube thickness 2.5mm < t < 25mm
Bracing inclination angle

Research Aim
To derive equations that can predict accurately the stressfatigue relationship of tubular steel joints of offshore wind
turbine supporting structures for structural optimisation.

Tasks to Achieve Aim:

Quantifying and defining and the structural load flow of the superstructure to the sub-structure. A typical existing offshore wind
turbine would be modelled
Identifying the limitations on the different typical tubular steel joints
of different codes and Standards.
Carryout numerical Simulation on these typical tubular steel joints
and validate with existing models
Carryout analysis on upper limits of geometric and steel strength
of present codes and standards of Eurocode and CIDECT.
Validate result with other Stress-Fatigue resistance of welded
tubular joints
