Common Errors: Instruction Set

Proper way to label your images: Everything should have a figure number and
caption (10-11 point font) below the image. Your caption should point me to what is
important about your image.

Add circles, highlights, arrows, and labels directly to images to show the reader what youre
talking about.

Page numbers, titles, your name: Include but rarely style these. They should be the
same font as whatever else you have.

Be Uniform

Capitalization: Everything but short prepositions(to, for, from, in) and conjunctions (and, or,
but)

Use the same fonts and bullets in the same places/headings and sub-headings. Dont vary.

Bullets for lists where order doesnt matternumbers for chronological lists.

Good job limiting your scope, describing what you are going to address and not
address.

Lists:

Dont include a colon before a list unless what comes before the colon is a complete
sentence.

Make sure you are punctuating your bulleted lists and numbers correctly. They should all
either end with punctuation or all not end with it. Generally, if you use a colon, you have a
semicolon or comma after each member and a period at the end because it is all technically
one sentence.

Common Errors: Instruction Set

There should be no materials used later in the

instructions that werent listed in the materials section.

Most people needed more tips, warnings, feedback

mechanisms, and education.

Avoid stacking emphasis in your headings and subheadings: you shouldnt have italics, color change,
bold, and underline. Choose one or two forms of
emphasis.

Commas come inside the quotation marks:

First, click on the button labeled remove all, which will

delete all the numbers from the cell.

3. Pre-Existing Research

Who else has done research

on a similar problem?

What are the pros and cons

of this other research?

What are you contributing

uniquely?

In this project you will analyze 3

other solutions, providing a
detailed description and pros and
cons list of each.

This is something youll have to

look to student examples for.

4. Proposal/Method/Plan of
Work

What will you do? The methods section describes your project
activities in detail, indicating how your objectives will be
accomplished. The description should include the sequence,
flow, and interrelationship of activities. It should discuss the
risks of your method, and indicate why your success is
probable. Finally, tell what is unique about your approach.

Explain how your proposal relates to your pre-existing research

Explain why you chose one methodological approach and not

another

Describe major activities for reaching each objective

Indicate the key project personnel who will carry out each activity

Show the interrelationship among project activities

Identify all project data that will be collected for use in evaluating
proposal outcomes

5. Project Evaluation,
Dissemination is the means
Deliverables,
by which you let others
know about your project.
Dissemination

Evaluations pinpoint what is really

happening in your project so you can
improve your project efficiency.
Surveys, judges, metrics of success.

Clearly identify the purpose of

your evaluation and the audiences
to be served by its results

Demonstrate that an appropriate

evaluation procedure is included
for every project objective

Clearly summarize any reports to

be provided to the funding source
based on the evaluation, and
generally describe their content
and timing?

Deliverables What are you

actually going to produce?
When will this be produced?

Specify the tentative titles,

target journals, and
submission dates. Likewise,
indicate which meetings will
be attended, including
dates and locations for
presenting papers.
