Evaluation
Questions
1-7
Like on all magazines I have used a masthead, this is a
key part to any magazine as it is the thing that most
people remember about there chosen magazine. Also
the name of the magazine has to appeal to the target
audience. I think mixed magazine fits my specified
music genre as it relates to the type of music and
lifestyle.
As any product my magazine has a barcode, this is a generic convention. They are
usually black and white and situated in the corners of magazines. The barcode is a
vital part of the magazine as after it is distributed it would not be possible to sell
without a barcode. I have also added the magazine’s website above the barcode, I
have only noticed this on a select few magazines.

Any additional information on the front of a magazine is most likely cover

lines. I have used the same font and colour from the masthead as it keeps a
sense of continuity to the front page of my magazine. They are used to inform
the reader of what kind of stuff is in the issue, as an example I have put four
artists name’s on the front with a few words about them in the magazine. This
is a popular convention of a magazine, however this is not a necessity on a
magazine a few just have the masthead and picture.
I have included page numbers in my
magazine as without these the
I have put my main subject on the front contents page would be a waste of
cover as with most magazines, he is also time.
the main focus on the contents page, but I
have included pictures of other and
covered story's on others.
This picture is of my model, (Jack Tranter) he is
17 and wears clothing typical of a electro-pop
artist, he is wearing blue skinny jeans, black
oversized t-shirt and a cap. I wanted him to look
very casual but whilst still making contact with
the camera, I like his style and it fits perfectly
with the genre of my magazine, hence the
reason I chose him. I purposely got him to wear
opposite colour
earrings.

This is a Electro-Pop duo called 3oH!3 made up of

two white males (Nathaniel Motte and Sean
Foreman). In this photo’s they are wearing skinny
jeans hats and the bottom one is wearing a ill fitted
jumper, these items are all very colorful. I think
these two musicians re very similar to mine in the
way they dress and act.
COMPLEX magazine is distributed by by “Marketasia
distributors” I feel these would be the right
company to distribute my magazine as they aren't
necessarily the same genre but they are of similar
taste and both share some of the same features and
conventions. A lot of features in my magazine are
inspired by “COMPLEX” magazine there for I
imagine the readers of complex would enjoy to read
to magazine.
This is Harvey Jones, he is 16 and
studying at lutterworth college, he
loves originality and has a very fun
personality. He enjoys lots of genre’s of
music but because of his individual
styles and thoughts he is very
passionate about electro-pop, and
frequently attends live music gigs for
his favorite artists.
His favorite bands and acts include
Ellie Golding, La Roux, 3OH!3 and Hot
Chip to name a few. Music being one
of his main subjects of interest fashion
is also important to Harvey, and his
favorite shops are American apparel,
Wellgosh and Topman for the basics. I think Harvey would love to read my magazine as it
fits his personality and likes perfectly, mixing music with popular culture and fashion. It
frequently hosts all his favorite bands and could move him on to new bands that are
featured in my magazine. Theirs is something to cater for multiple culture and opinions but
is perfect for some one like Harvey who’s tastes are very specific and individual.
Masthead : This appeals to my chosen audience as the
name relates to the genre and the style and colour
attracts people to look at it, I chose these color's for the
masthead as they contrast with the blue of his top, these
color’s appeal to both male and female. I chose this font
for the masthead as it was different and stood out, with
the plain boring texts that were already on the market. I
included these bands on the front of y magazine as I felt
well established artists and bands on the front of my
magazine would interest my target audience and maybe
even appeal to a bigger audience.

Pictures: I chose these pictures out of all the ones i took

because i thought that they were the best quality ones.
All my photos were also the ones that showed the genre
in the best way. For the picture backgrounds I used a
brick wall in black an white so the subject is accentuated
and for the contents I used a pale grey back ground as
the yellow highlights will stand out well.
For my photo’s and photo shoot my weapon of choice
was the OLYMPUS E-500 swapping between a ZUIKO
DIGITAL macro lens and a ZUIKO DIGITAL standard zoom
lens, I felt this was the best of my camera’s for this job
as it produces the best quality close up and long range
photo’s due to the interchangeable lens’s.

For my editing
software I used Adobe Photoshop
CS4 this is a professional program
that many IT involved company’s
use. I created my contents front
page and double page spread on
Photoshop, I found this easy to
work with as I have a lot of
experience with the program.

To run this software and to do all my editing on I

used my Apple MacBook I felt this was the best thing
to use as it has a fast processor and can run multiple
programs at the same time so is perfect for editing
photo’s and creating my magazine.
This was created by just myself and was done in a
very short period of time using basic equipment
with little knowledge of magazine conventions.
However I was very pleased with this magazine
as a first try I felt this wasn’t a bad attempt, I feel
that whilst having to deal with little knowledge
and skill this looked good and was finished to a
high standard.

This is my final product, for this to be completed

on time, I had to rush the double page spread as
I spent to much time on the contents and cover,
this time around with Photoshop I knew exactly
what I was doing. I have kept a
theme running through out
the magazine. My pictures a
of far better quality and my
editing skill are far better. I
am ecstatic with the final
outcome and feel my hard
work payed of.
