MATERIAL HANDLING
 MATERIAL IN THE FORM OF RAW MATERIAL SEMI- FINISHED
GOODS ARE OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE SUCCESS OF AN
ENTERPRISE.

 MATERIAL HANDLING DIRECTLY AFFECT ON THE SUCCESS OF

FIRM.

 EXPENDITURE MADE ALL MATERIAL IS MONEY INVESTED IN

INVENTORIES,COST OF STORAGE,TRANSPORTATION
COST,INSURANCE,WASTAGE ETC.BECAUSE OF THE MAGNITUDE
OF EXPENDITURE REQUIRED AND CONTROLLING MATERIAL.
Definition

 Material handling involves the

movement of material for one place
to another for the purposes of
production processing. they are
moved either manually or
mechanically.
 According to American material
handling society, “Material handling
is the art and science involving the
movement and storing the
substances in any form.
Types of Material movement

 Vertical movement
 Horizontal movement
 Combination of both
Objectives of Material Handling

1. To reduce material handling cost.

2. Reduction in manufacturing through faster
movement.
3. To control towards flow of material.
4. To improve working conditions and greater
safety in movement of material.
5. To reduce hazards during of movement of
material.
6. To utilize properly storage capacity and storage
area.
7. Hire productivity at lower manufacturing cost.
Functions of Material handling
 Selection of equipment, machine and plant layout to
eliminate or minimize material handling requirement.
 Selection of appropriate and efficient the cost of
material and safe material equipment.
 Minimizing the cost of material handling by
minimizing movement of semi-finished goods during
production.
 To plan movement of optimum number of pieces in
one unit.
 Minimization of distance moved.
 Eliminate/ minimize back tracking and duplicate
handling.

Types of Inventory Items

Raw materials and purchased parts from outside
suppliers.
Components: subassemblies that are awaiting final
assembly.
Work in process: all materials or components on the
production floor in various stages of production.
Finished goods: final products waiting for purchase or to be
sent to customers.
Supplies: all items needed but that are not part of the
finished product, such as paper clips, duplicating machine
toner, and tools.
