What is a CPC?
 Clinicopathologic Conference
 is a medical clinical exercise in which the
history of a patient's illness is presented to an
experienced clinician for discussion in a
didactic setting.
 used to teach our students and house staff
how an experienced clinician should
approach a difficult or challenging case.
CPC

 The typical format has a case report

presented for diagnosis by a guest physician,
followed by a discussion of the confirmed
diagnosis by a pathologist.

Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Give a diagnosis based on a logical analysis
of the clinical data
2. Enumerate the differential diagnoses and
explain how these are ruled out.
3. Discuss the mechanism/s of the disease/s and
explain the clinical manifestations based on
the pathologic findings

COURSE CONTENT:

 Eight cases are chosen

 Equal distribution are given to the different
specialties of Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery & OB-
GYN
 Synchronization with third year topics is practiced
as much as possible

Design/Conduct of the course:
 The class is divided in to 8 groups alphabetically
 Schedule of presentation of all the groups is made randomly
(Groups draw lots to determine which group presents first)
 CPC protocol is distributed 2 weeks before the scheduled
presentation.
 All presenting group member s are expected to participate
actively in the research, analysis and discussion of the case and
preparation of the visual aids.

Design/ Conduct of the course:
 Every group member must be prepared to discuss the case since
the discussant will be chosen randomly before the start of the
session
 A clinical consultant is invited to moderate each session
 The session will be as follows:
 Case presentation and Discussion : 35 to 45 mins
 Summary of the case; clinicopathologic correlation
 READING OF THE PROTOCOL IS NOT ALLOWED
 Comments of the moderator, questions directed to the members of
the presenting group: 35-45 mins
 Presentation of pathologic findings and CPC by the pathology
resident: 10-15 min
 Questions from presenting group and audience regarding the
pathologic findings: 5 minutes
 Quiz and feedback: 10 minutes

Design/ Conduct of the course:
 Non-presenting groups are required to submit the
diagnosis and brief discussion of the case, 1 day
before the session. This will be the basis for the
non-presenting group output.
 Non-discussing groups are expected to give their
diagnosis. They may be called to present a short
discussion and are encouraged to ask questions

 Policiesregarding absences during the
sessions and examinations
 All students are expected to be present during all the
sessions
 A member or members of the presenting group who
is/are absent during the presentation is required to join
another group.
 Students will not be allowed to report for the session only
to take the quiz. They will have to be present during the
entire session.

 No make-up is given in cases of missed quizzes
whether for excused or unexcused absences.
 Make-up examinations for missed evaluation exam is
given for excused absences.
 Make-up examinations will be scheduled by the
pathology department.

 Students with a final grade below 75% will be required
to take the removal examination
 Students with a final grade lower than 65% will be
given an outright failing grade
