Types of Production System

This document defines and describes different types of production systems. It discusses intermittent production systems, including job production and batch production, which produce goods according to customer orders. It also discusses continuous production systems, including mass production and continuous production, which produce goods to maintain stock. Job production involves unique custom orders while batch production produces standard goods in batches. Mass production produces large volumes of identical goods and continuous production requires high investment in dedicated facilities that cannot flexibly change production.

INTRODUCTION

Production is the process by which raw materials is converted into final

products through chemical or mechanical process which adds value to
the raw materials.

Buffa defined production as, a process by which goods and services are
created.

Some products are regular of the organizations and some products are
manufactured according to the specification of customers.

Types Of Production System:

1.

Intermittent
production
system(Production
as per order)

a) Job
Production

b) Batch
Production

2. Continuous
production
system(Productio
n stock)

a) Mass
Production

b) Continuous
Production

1) Intermittent Production
System:

The production facilities are flexible enough to handle a wide variety of

products and sizes.

There is no pre-defined specification of product.

Such kind of product have generally no stock or very less stock.so ,this
production system is called production as per order.

This system have two categories :

a) Job type production system
b) Batch type production system.

a) Job Type Production System:

Production system is generally adopted for special type of order from

customer.

It is also popularly known as Job-shop or Unit production .

EXAMPLE:

Job type production system includes manufacturing aircraft, ship, space

vehicle bridge, turbine blades and dam construction, ship building,
boliers, turbine ,machine tools.

b) Batch Type Production

System:

Batch production system is generally adopted for jobs having repetition

and standard product.

Batch production is s stage in between job-shop production and mass

production.

Examples:

Batch type production system includes manufacturing of small and

medium machineries; production of drugs and medicines etc.

2) Continuous Production
System:

The production facility are highly involved in Continuous production of

the product.

There is no scope of having flexibility to accommodate any changes in

ru of the production.

Generally this production system is for making stock of this

product. So,this production system is called production to stock.

This system have two categories :

a)Mass production system
b) Continuous production system

a) Mass Production System:

In this type of production system, large number of identical products are

produced with the anticipation of the demand in the future.

Manufacturing is carried out using special purpose machines having the

provision such that other products can be manufactured, if required,
having same manufacturing processes.

Examples:

Includes the manufacturing of glass manufacturing

utensil manufacturing.

b) Continuous Production
System:

It is extension of mass production system.

The investment required is very high.

If the production of that product is outdated in the market, then the

setup is not useful for other products. This system is also called flow
production system .

Examples:

Textile industry, chemical industry, oil refinery etc.
