Yarn Production Engineering (3012)

The roving frame takes the sliver produced by the draw frame and further drafts, twists, and winds it into a roving package. This is necessary for two key reasons: 1) the high draft of 300-500x needed to produce yarn cannot be achieved by ring spinning alone and 2) draw frame cans are not suitable for efficient transport and presentation of fibers to the ring spinning frame. While the roving frame addresses these issues, it is more complex than other machines due to the winding process requiring several integrated mechanical components. Modern demands include simplifying the design to reduce faults, increasing speeds, producing larger packages, and automating processes.

YARN PRODUCTION

ENGINEERING
(3012)

THE ROVING FRAME

Requirement of roving
frame??

The draw frame produces a sliver that

already exhibits all the characteristics
required for the creation of a yarn
ordered, clean strand of fibers laying parallel
to one another.

Flaws of Roving frame

The roving machine itself is

Complicated
liable to faults, causes defects
adds to production costs
delivers a product that is sensitive in both
winding and unwinding.

Two principal reasons for the use of roving frame

Draft
Transport and Presentation

Draft

Draw frame sliver is a thick, untwisted, hairy,

create fly.
The draft needed to convert this to a yarn is in
the region of 300 - 500.
The drafting arrangements of ring spinning
machines, are not capable of processing this
strand in a single drafting operation to create a
yarn with required properties
The fine, twisted roving is significantly better
suited to this purpose.

Transport and Presentation

The second reason is that draw frame cans

represent the worst conceivable mode of
transport and presentation of feed material to
the ring spinning frame
Ring creel capacity.

Tasks of the roving frame

Attenuation of sliver (increase in draft,

reduction in size )
Twist (to hold fibers together)
Winding of roving into a package that can be
easily transported and stored.

It is the winding operation above all that

makes the roving frame a relatively complex
and problem-plagued machine. This winding
operation requires, in addition to spindle and
flyer, a cone drive (or variable transmission),
a differential gear and a package build
motion

Demands placed upon the modern roving frame

design of simpler machines, less liable to

faults;
increase in spindle rotation speeds;
larger packages;

automation of the machine and of package

transport
