Electrolysis of Aqueous Solution: Revision

Electrolysis is a process where electricity is used to break down compounds in molten or aqueous solutions into their constituent elements. There are three main factors that affect which ions are selected during electrolysis: 1) the position of ions in the electrochemical series, 2) the concentration of the electrolyte solution, and 3) the type of electrodes used. Examples are then provided of electrolysis experiments using different electrolyte solutions and electrodes to demonstrate how the selected ions and products differ depending on these three factors.
