There are different types of documentaries that provide factual information about various subjects. A documentary can use official documents, pictures, or interviews with real people involved in events to report on a particular topic. To be good, a documentary needs a skilled documentarian, interesting subject material, and strong camera work. Some common modes of documentaries are reflexive, where the filmmaker acknowledges their presence on camera; observational, which follows a person or event as it unfolds; expository, giving an analysis of a topic or person; and participatory, allowing engagement between the filmmaker and subjects.
