Mechanical Behavior of Materials - Lecture Slides - Chapter 1

This document is the introduction chapter of a textbook on mechanical behavior of materials. It discusses different types of material failure including deformation, fracture, corrosion, wear, erosion, elastic and plastic deformation, creep deformation, fracture under static and impact loading, and fatigue under cyclic loading. It also mentions the combined effects of fretting fatigue and corrosion fatigue. Finally, it discusses considerations for design and material selection, including safety, durability, and use of safety factors.

Mechanical Behavior of Materials

Chapter 01. Introduction

School of Mechanical Engineering
Yonsei Univ.

1.1 Introduction
Mechanical Behavior of Materials:
(i) Study of deformation
(ii) Fracture in materials

Failure:
(i) : Fracture failure
(ii) : Yield failure (Plastic deformation)

Concerns:
(i) General state of stress (3D state of stress)
(ii) Presence of flaws or cracks (Fracture mechanics)
(iii) or for long period of time (Creep or
relaxation)
(iv) repeatedly applied and removed (Fatigue)

1.2 Types of Material Failure

Deformation failure: Change of physical dimensions and shapes to
cause function to be lost or impaired
Fracture: A component is separated into two or more pieces
Corrosion: Loss of material due to chemical action
Wear: Surface removal due to abrasion
Erosion: Wear caused by fluid

1.2 Types of Material Failure

1.2.1
Elastic and Plastic Deformation

Elastic deformation ()
(i) Method of elementary solid mechanics
(ii) Theory of elasticity
(iii) Structural analysis

Plastic deformation

: Yield stress
: Proportionality limit

1.2.2 Creep Deformation

Creep: Deformation accumulated with time

Creep

Relaxation

Creep rupture: Time dependent

1.2.3
Fracture under Static and Impact Loading

Brittle fracture: Little plastic deformation under

static loading
impact loading
Fracture mechanics: Study of cracks in solids

(Fracture toughness): Resistance to brittle fracture

Ductile fracture: Significant plastic deformation

Environmental cracking: Combination of stress and chemical

effects

1.2.4
Fatigue under Cyclic Loading

Fatigue: Failure due to repeated loading

(i) High cycle fatigue: is high
(ii) Low cycle fatigue: is low
(iii) Thermal fatigue

1.2 Types of Material Failure

1.2.5 Combined Effects

Fretting fatigue: Wear + fatigue (fail at very low stress)

Corrosion fatigue: Corrosion + fatigue

1.3 Design and Material Selection

Design is;
(i) Safety provision
(ii) Determination of dimensions and shapes

Durability: Capacity of an item to survive its intended use for a

suitable long period of time

Safety factors (safety & durability) in design

(i) X ( : stress
(ii) X : life
