About NTPC
NTPC, the largest power company in india, was setup in 1975 to
accelerate power development in country.
NTPC has total installed capacity of 47,178MW (including JVS) with 18
coal based, 7 gas based,2 hydro based, 9 Joint Venture stations are
coal based and 5 renewable energy.
The company has 17.73% of the total national capacity, it contributes
24% of total power generation due to its focus on high efficiency.
It plans to be a 75,000 MW company by 2017.

About Barh Super Thermal Power station (Bihar)

NTPC Barh located barely 4KM east of the barh sub-division on
National Highway-31 in patna district.
The stage-1 of NTPC barh was established in 1999. The stage-2 of
NTPC barh was established in 2006
The BSTPS are divided in to two stage stage -1 have three unit one
unit capacity are 660 MW so (660x3)=1980 MW and stage -2 have two
unit (660x2)= 1320MW.
The total of BSTPS generation capacity are 3,300 MW.

Operation of a Power Plant

BSTPS coal base station main fuel of station coal. The thermal power
plant require the water for steam.(Rankine cycle based)
The fuel being used is coal which is supplied from the jharia coal
field in Jharkhand. And water supply is given from the ganga river.

Basic steps of electricity generation: Coal to stem

Steam to mechanical power
Mechanical power to electrical power

Basic principle of thermal power plant

A generating station which converts heat energy of coal combustion into
electrical energy is known as a steam power station.
Steam is produced in the boiler by utilizing the heat of coal combustion. The
steam is then expanded in the steam turbine and is condensed in a condenser
to be fed into the boiler again. The steam turbine drives the alternator which
converts mechanical energy of the turbine into electrical energy

Boiler
Boiler is a rectangular furnace about 50 feet on side and 130 feet
tall. theirs walls are made of high pressure steel tubes about 2.3
inches in diameter which circulates DM water to be converted into
steam. The thermal radiation heats water and changes to steam.
Steam is sent to the turbine .The efficiency and technology of
boiler vary according to the operational pressures(217.176atm)

Super Heater
Super heater is component of steam-generating unit in
which steam, after it has left the boiler drum, is
heated above the saturation temperature.
The super heater may consist of one or more stage of
tube banks arranged to effectively transfer heat from
the product of combustion

12

Steam Turbine
The turbine generator consists of a series of steam turbines
interconnected to each other and generators on a common
shaft. There is a high pressure turbine at one end, followed
by intermediate pressure turbine and low pressure turbine in
other end. Steam loses pressure and temperatures as it
passes through turbines and expands in volume

Economiser
An economiser is a mechanical device which is recover the
heat from the flue gases on their way to chimney.
It increases the 10-12% efficiency of the plant.

Reheater
Reheater is a heater which is used to rise the temperature of
steam which have fallen from the intermediate pressure
turbine

13

Condenser
The steam coming out from the Low Pressure Turbine (a little
above its boiling pump) is brought into thermal contact with
cold water (pumped in from the cooling tower) in the
condenser, where it condenses rapidly back into water,
creating near Vacuum-like conditions inside the condenser
chest

Cooling Tower
A cooling tower is a heat rejection device which rejects
waste heat to the atmosphere through the cooling of a water
stream to a lower temperature
Cooling tower size 200 metres (660 ft) tall and 100 metres
(330ft) diameter but rectangular shape 40m tall (130ft)and
80m (260ft) dia.

Switch Yard
Switchyard is considered as the HEART of the Power Plant. Power generated can be worthy only if it
is successfully transmitted and received by its consumers. Switchyard plays a very important role as
a junction between the generation and transmission. It is a junction, which carries the generated
power to its destination (i.e. consumers).
