CERAMIC SHAPING PROCESS

PRESENTED BY
ASIFUR RAHMAN
DEPT. OF MECHANICAL ENG.
ALIAH UNIVERSITY

What is Ceramics
Ceramics are compound of metallic and non
metallic element. The term ceramics refers to
both the material and to the ceramic product
itself
The Greek word KERAMOS means potters
clay ,from there the word ceramic came

BASIC STEPS OF SHAPING

CERAMICS
1.Crushing or grinding of raw
material & mixing with bonding
material
2.Shaping into desired shape
3.Drying & Firing
Crushing

Shaping
1.Casting
2.Plastic forming
3.Pressing

Casting
The most common and widely used ceramic casting process is
slip casting.
Another important ceramic casting process is..

Doctor-Blade
process

Thin ceramic sheets, less than

1.5 mm thick , can be made by
a casting technique called
doctor blade process. In this
operation , the slip is cast over a
moving plastic belt ,and its

Plastic forming

Can be done by various methods, such as..

1.Extrusion
2.Injection molding
3.Jiggering
Extrusion
The clay mixture is forced through
a die opening by screw feeder
Injection
The clay mixture is forced into a
closed die mold

Jiggering

Clay slugs are first extruded ,then

formed into a bat over a plaster
mold and finally jiggered on a
rotating mold
As done on potters wheel

Pressing
The various methods of pressing are
Dry pressing
Dry pressing

Similar to powder metal compaction , dry pressing is used for

relatively simple shape. It have high production rate and close
control of dimension. The moisture content of the mixture is
generally below
4-12% and the pressing pressure is between 35-200 Mpa

Wet pressing
Wet pressing

In this process the part is formed in a mold while under high pressure.
Moisture content
Of the part usually ranges from 10-15%.In this process production
rate is high , but part size is limited and dimensional control is also
difficult because of high shrinkage.

Isostatic pressing
Isostatic pressing

This process is used for ceramics in order to obtain uniform density

throughout the part

Drying & firing

Drying and firing is done to give the product strength .
Drying is critical stage as there is great tendency of crack
formation ,thus the control of atmospheric humidity and
temperature is important
Firing ,also referred as sintering involves heating the
dried part to an elevated temperature in a controlled
environment
