The document summarizes the steering system of a vehicle. The primary function of the steering system is to achieve angular motion of the front wheels to negotiate turns through linkages and a steering gear. Additional functions include providing directional stability, minimizing tire wear, and allowing for suspension movement. The main components are the steering wheel, column, gearbox, and drop arm. Common types of steering gears that convert rotational motion to linear motion include worm and wheel, recirculating ball, worm and sector, cam and lever, and rack and pinion, with the latter being most common in cars.

STEERING SYSTEM
Its primary function is to achieve
angular motion of the front wheel to negotiate a turn with the help of various linkages and steering gear. Its secondary functions are:1. To Provide directional stability of the vehicle. 2. To minimize tyre wear. 3. To provide perfect steering condition. 4. To recover the vehicle after completing a turn. 5. To allow for suspension action. Components of steering system :1. Steering wheel 2. Steering column 3. Steering gear box 4. Drop arm

Steering gears are used to convert the turning motion of the
steering wheel to the to and fro motion of the link rod of the steering linkage which lastly transfer to the road wheel. The motion of steering wheel to the road wheel depends on the steering ratio. Steering ratio is the ratio of the angle turned by steering wheel in degree to turn of the wheel in degree. Steering ratio use generally vary from 12:1 for cars to about 35:1 for heavy vehicles. There are different types of steering gear:Worm and wheel steering gear. Recirculating ball steering gear. Worm and sector gear. Cam and lever steering gear. Rack and pinion steering gear.
Rack and pinion steering gear
It is most common type of steering gear used in small truck, cars
and SUVs. On most car it takes three to four complete revolution of steering wheel to make the wheel complete turn from lock to lock.
