MEC531 Intro & Course Outline 2015 - Halim

This document provides information about the MEC531 Mechanical Engineering Design 1 course taught by Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah. The course covers the mechanical design process and design of mechanical elements, including failure theories and an integrated design project. Upon completing the course, students should be able to apply the design process, select machine components, develop an engineering design project, work independently and in groups, and produce technical reports. The course content includes mechanical design process, design for strength, design of joints, power transmission elements, flexible elements, and roller bearings. Students will be assessed through tests, assignments, and a semester-long practical design project.

Course Description
The course covers the Mechanical Design Process and Design of
Mechanical Elements. It includes failure theories for both static and
fatigue conditions. One integrated design project from concept to
blueprint/production drawing is also included.

Course Outcome

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

Apply the basic concept of mechanical design process and the
design of machine element towards the design of mechanical
systems.
Select machine components based on standard codes and
practices.
Develop a practical, sustainable engineering design project.
Work independently as well as in group during design process.
Produce and present technical report in a structured format and
professional.
