Scba

The document provides an introduction to self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA). It discusses the origin of SCBAs in coal mining in the 1800s. It also outlines various respiratory hazards SCBAs aim to protect against, such as oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, and particulates. SCBAs allow firefighters and others to work safely in dangerous atmospheres by providing a portable supply of breathing air. The document classifies breathing equipment and describes various SCBA components, donning and doffing procedures, maintenance requirements, and limiting factors for SCBA use.

Introduction to

SELF CONTAINED
BREATHING APPARATUS
(SCBA)

ORIGIN
First use in coal mines in the USA for
rescue operations, Draeger- a German
company -,was the first commercial
manufacturer of SCABA in the middle of
the 1800s
Subsequently deep sea divers started
using a model with an air line type that
uses a round heavy helmet similar to a
fish bowl with a port hole.

OPERATION
By-Demand

Gives air only when the person inhales,

air is released creating a vacuum and
forcing a valve to open
Continuous

Ventilation

Air is supplied continuously at a

manageable flow to increase its
pressure inside the face piece.
