STELLA Presentation

This document summarizes information about the STELLA software and its use in simulation and modeling. It provides an overview of STELLA, describing it as a software that allows modeling of systems without programming. It also discusses benefits of STELLA like increasing accuracy and facilitating organization of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The document then shares an example simulation using STELLA to model rat and owl populations and the effect on oil palm production, presenting 3 graphs of the simulation results. It concludes by discussing applications of simulation in manufacturing and inventory management.

ABOUT STELLA

STELLA stands for Structural Thinking Experimental Learning Laboratory with

Animation.
STELLA is a software package that allows the user to simulate systems without the use of
any advanced programming language.
STELLA can produce graphs and tables of data for any system modelled in the diagram.
Simulation Theory Model is a representation of an object, a system or an idea in some form
other than that of identity itself
Types of model are divided into two, which are physical and mathematical. Physical model
is like scale models and prototype plants while mathematical model is like analytical
queuing models, linear programs and simulation. A mathematical model is an abstract
model that uses mathematical language to describe the behaviour of a system.

Simulation in teaching and learning is the process of teaching and learning becomes more
interesting and exciting as the learners can explore everything in various types of experiments.
Simulation also can help the teachers to teach the abstract content to the students.
Simulation are very quick development of complex models, short learning cycles and no
programming is needed.
However, this simulation also can give disadvantages to the students that do not have computer
or limited availability of computers.
Simulation also can give a big problem to the users that do not know how to use 1 computer.
Besides, many simulations require intensive pre simulation lesson preparation. So, it takes
time if we want to use the simulation in a short period.
High cost of software also include as the disadvantage of the simulation. Only the trial one can
be used by the users.
But, after 30 days, it cannot be use anymore.
In addition, limited scope of applicability and also limited flexibility.

BENEFITS OF USING STELLA

The language increases the accuracy and clarity of verbal descriptions, ambiguities
diminishing and communication becomes much more efficient and effective.
The software provides a check on intuition, and also provides a vehicle for building
understanding of why.
The tools facilitates putting together in an organized and clear way the qualitative
and quantitative approaches present in the CIR-DSS framework
The tool enables an easier operation, demonstration, and replication of the CIRDSS

fixed population of rat at 13000 and the

population of owl at 10 and the amount of oil
palm harvested in the beginning was around
207 million
The increase in population of owl will
minimize the population of rat and maximize
the production of oil palm
Rat was the agent that affected the
production of palm oil
After few years, the population of owl started
to decrease and the population of rat
increase
the amount of oil palm increased steadily
from 207 million to 1 billion

we increased the population of rat to

40000, the population of owl
remained the same
The pattern of the graph is almost the
same as the first graph
The population of rat decreased as
the population of owl increased and
vice versa
However, compare with the first
graph, the amount of oil palm been
spoilt increased beacuse the
population of rat showed a higher
increasement.

population of rat maintained at 13000

The knob for population of owl have been
adjusted to 20
The population of owl increased slightly in the
beginning and drop drastically to zero after few
year because the population of the rat was very
low
Population of rat increased to 3 million after 25
years as there were no predator exist to
threaten their life
the amount of oil palm produced increased in
the first 18 years and started to drop to 169
million until 25th year as the population of rat
keep on increasing

APPLICATION IN SIMULATION
Manufacturing represents one of the most important applications of
simulation. Simulation can be used to predict the performance of an
existing or planned system and to compare alternative solutions for a
particular design problem.
The analytical techniques used in inventory management are not
sufficient to tackle all the important managerial problems requiring data
analysis. By using simulation, enables a manager to provide an insight
into certain managerial problems where analytical solution of a model is
not possible or where the actual environment is difficult to observe.
The main reason why simulation is used in these and other practical
areas of applications are that it can be used to estimate unknown
probabilities, distributions and expectations.

CONCLUSION
We gained three different graphs that showed different data.
The three graphs will show what happened to the oil palm if the
number of owls increases, or what will happen if the number of rats
higher than number of owls.
If the number of owls higher than number of rats, the production of
oil palm will increase and this will increase the revenue.
Every palm oil plantation in Malaysia will use natural predators to
protect the palm oil fruit from the rats.
An owl is a predator that been used. Instead of depending on
pesticides, the farmer only keeps the owls to check the rat
population.
