Bourdon Gauge: By: Sasivarnan (1000045)

The bourdon gauge uses a curved metal tube that straightens under increasing pressure, causing a pointer attached to the free end of the tube to move and indicate the pressure level on a dial. It can measure pressures ranging from 0.6 to 7000 bar without electricity by using the mechanical movement of the bourdon tube. As pressure enters the sealed and curved tube, the tube straightens, and a lever system magnifies the motion of the free end of the tube to move a pointer over the gauge dial. The bourdon gauge is accurate, inexpensive, and suitable for measuring high pressures in gases and liquids.

Introduction
Measure

relative pressure ranging from

0.6 to 7000 bar. (60 to 700000 kPA)

Classified

as mechanical pressure

Operates

without needs of electricity

Bourdon Gauge

Mechanical view

Principles
In

the bourdon gauge, there is a

thin walled metal tube which is
bent like a C- shape.

The

end of the tube, attached a

lever system that magnifies any
motion of the free end of the
tube.

When

attached to a reboiler :

As pressure increases, it travels

through the tube.
the metal tube begins to straighten
as the pressure increases inside
of it.
As the tube straightens, the
pointer moves around a dial that
indicates the pressure.

Steps
In

a Bourdon tube gauge, a "C"

shaped, hollow spring tube is closed
and sealed at one end.

The

pressure medium enters the tube

through the socket, the pressure
differential from the inside to the
outside causes the tube to move.

Medium:

water, oil, etc.

The

direction of this movement is

determined by the curvature of the
tubing.
The inside radius being slightly shorter than
the outside radius.

When

the pressure is removed, the

spring nature of the tube material
returns the tube to its original shape .

For

severe service applications, the case

is sealed and filled with glycerine or
silicone fluid.
cushions the tube and movement against
damage from impact and vibration

Industrial Applications
For

gaseous and liquid media

which are not highly viscous.

For
For

high measuring accuracy.

measuring medium with very

high pressures.

ADCANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGE

- Accurate results

- Respond slowly in pressure

changes

- Low cost

- Sensitive to shocks and vibrations

- Simple in construction

- Amplification is a must as the

displacement of the free end of
the bourdon tube is low.

- Safe for high pressure

measurement
