Science Fair Procedures

This document describes the procedures for building a paper speaker as a science fair project. It involves cutting paper strips to wrap around a magnet, winding magnet wire around a paper tube, and connecting the paper speaker to an audio device to test the volume produced using temporary and permanent magnets. The student is to record the average decibel levels produced by 5 temporary magnets and 5 permanent magnets in a data table.

PAPER SPEAKER

FUNCTION OF SPEAKER

APPARATUS

PROCEDURES

1) Cut two strips of paper 20cm

long with 2 cm width.

2) Wrap 1 stripe of paper

tightly around the magnet.

3) Prepare two paper tubes (one

with slightly larger diameter)

4) Make sure the stack of

magnet fits inside the larger
tube with a gap between them.
Remove the smaller paper tube.

5) The magnet need to be able

to slide back and forth inside
the larger tube without touching
the wall.

6) Use a small piece of tape to

attach the magnet wire to
paper tube.

5) Prepare about 3m of wire out

of the spool of magnet.

7) Neatly wrap 50 turns of wire

still attached to the spool
around the paper tube.

8) Completely wrap tape around

the wire will to prevent it from
unravelling.

9) Remove the magnets from

the tube.

10) Rub the end of the magnet

wire with sand paper.

11) Fold two business cards

into M shape.

12) Glue the paper tube and

business cards on the back of
the plate.

13) Glue the free ends of the

business cards on a cardboards
base.

14) Stick the stack of magnet on

the center of a business card.

15) Magnet inserted into wire

coil.

16) Connect audio device,

amplifier and paper speaker.

17) Test the paper speaker with

1000hz test tone and collect
date.

18) Calculate an average volume

in decibels and record the
values in data table for 5
temporary magnets and 5
permanent magnets.
