0 - Relative Atomic Mass

Relative atomic mass is defined as the ratio of the average mass of an atom of an element to one-twelfth the mass of one atom of carbon-12. It is calculated by taking into account the relative masses and proportions of any isotopes an element may have. For example, chlorine consists of atoms with masses of 35 (75% of atoms) and 37 (25% of atoms), so its relative atomic mass is calculated as (75% of 35) + (25% of 37) = 35.5. The relative atomic mass provides information about the naturally occurring mix of isotopes for each element.

Relative atomic mass

:-Definition
the ratio of the average mass per
atom of the naturally occurring form
of an element to one-twelfth the
mass of an atom of carbon-12.
Symbol: Ar Abbreviation: r.a.m.
Former name: atomic weight

a.m.u
1 u = 1/12th the mass of one atom
of the carbon-12 isotope.
U= a.m.u=undefined atomic
mass unit.

Isotopes
Some elements have isotopes. the
relative mass and proportion of each is
taken into account.
For example: chlorine consists of atoms of
relative isotopic masses 35 (75%) and 37
(25%). Its relative atomic mass is 35.5.
Ar = (75/100 x 35) + (25/100 x 37) =
35.5

:-Equation
(% of isotope 1 mass of isotope
1) + (% of isotope 2 mass of
isotope 2) 100.
