Classification of social
groups
Primary Group is a the main source of
identity, and provides emotional support and a sense of social integration. Secondary group is a group of people who identify and interact with one another because of their desire to achieve a common instrumental goal. Small group is a group of two or three members.
Large group involves more members,
such that they specialize in the performance of their roles in the group. Membership group is an informal, primary group where membership is based on the support one gets from fellow members Instrumental group is a task-oriented group built to achieve a goal not possible if the individual works alone.
Expressive group is one that is organized to
meet the emotional needs of the members and to provide self-expression and support for family members, friends and peer groups. Association is a purposely-organized, voluntary and formal, institutionalized organization whose members do not make a living of their membership; and the exclusive membership generates a strong sense of belonging
Friendship group is an informal,
voluntary and primary group whose members are chosen on the basis of the support they get from each other, which is mutual, shared and expected; and it is usually formed by people who are socially equal. Formal organizations are purposelyorganized groupings aimed to achieve specific goals.
Informal organizations are small, cooperative and not
visible groups that operate within the formal organization. Counterculture group is a deliberately formed group of individuals whose goal is to resist, change or destroy the dominant society or the existing social order. Conservative groups are those that reinforce the importance of societys norms and the maintenance of the social order, like the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Bishops of the Philippines that believe that the catholic values and traditions should be preserved and followed in accordance with the teachings of the church.
