Chapter 3 Contents

This chapter discusses research design and methodology. It outlines different types of research design such as case study, ethnography, historical study, phenomenology, and grounded theory. It also discusses sources of data such as primary and secondary data. The chapter covers population of the study, types of sampling methods including probability sampling and non-probability sampling, and specific sampling techniques like simple random sampling, systematic sampling, and stratified sampling.

CONTENTS OF CHAPTER 3
DESIGN A plan or something that the mind
conceptualized
In research , a blueprint or the skeletal framework of the
research study

RESEARCH Design
1. Case Study
To describe a person, thing, or any creature for the
purpose of explaining the reasons behind the actions,
attitudes or way of doing things. To determine why a
person, , organization, community or event acts ,
behaves, occurs or exists in a particular manner. (Meng
2012/Yin 2012)

Types of Research Design

2. Ethnography a study of a certain cultural group or
organization in which the researcher, to obtain knowledge
about the characteristics, organizational set up, and
relationship of group members, must necessarily involve
you in their group activities. ( Winn/2014)

Types of Research Design

3. Historical Study- Systematic collection and objective
evaluation of data related to past occurrences in order to
test hypotheses concerning causes, effects, or trends of
these events that may help to explain present events and
anticipate future events. (Gay, 1996)

Types of Research Design

4. Phenomenology the research that focus on peoples
meaning and making strategies in relation to their life
experiences. The gathering of data of how people go
through inevitable events in their life. (Paris 2014)

Types of Research Design

5. Grounded Theory - To understand the social and
psychological processes and underlying theories that
characterize an event or situation.

Types of Research Design

Primary Data- are those gathered directly from
respondents/subjects through interview
Secondary Data information that is gathered from
books, magazine, newspaper, studies, and online sources

Sources of Data
Sampling the method or process of selecting
respondents or people to answer questions meant to yield
data for a research study.
The chosen ones constitute the Sample through which
you will derive facts and evidence to support the claim or
conclusion of your study.( Paris 2013)

Population of the Study

1. Probability Sampling (unbiased sampling)- all
members are listed in the sampling frame representing a
certain population focused on the study.
2. Non-Probability Sampling The subjects are chosen
on their availability or the purpose of the study. This is
not a scientific way of selecting respondents.

Types of Sampling
Methods
1. Simple Random Sampling using the pure chance
selection, equal opportunity is given to the population.
(Burns 2012)
2. Systematic Sampling- a system is utilized to select
samples
3. Stratified Sampling- the total population is subdivided
into groups before deciding on a sample
4. Cluster Sampling to isolate a set of persons instead of
individuals to serve as sample

Types of Probability
Sampling
1. Quota Sampling- Identifying a specific set of persons
whom you believe have the characteristics of the target
population
2. Purposive Sampling selecting a sample base on the
objective of the study
3. Voluntary Sampling
4. Availability Sampling
5. Snowball Sampling does not give a specific set of
samples

Types of Non- Probability

Sampling
