Rudder Control System
Rudder Control System
Rudder
(1) The pilot and copilot pedals supply rudder control through a series of cables,
pulleys, and mechanical linkages. The rudder is attached to and operated by three
independent PCUs which are mechanically controlled and hydraulically actuated.
(2) The rudder control system includes antijam breakout mechanisms and yaw
dampers. The yaw dampers give protection to the aircraft from yaw oscillations and
get their input from the autoflight control system (221100). The antijam
breakout
mechanisms make sure that a jammed cable circuit does not prevent rudder control
Master movement.
(3) Rudder trim is supplied by a rudder trim switch installed on the center pedestal.
Rudder control is also supplied by the autoflight control system (221100).
Rudder positional data is indicated on the EICAS.
Rudder Control System
(1) The rudder trim system contains one rudder trim actuator and one trim panel
assembly. A rudder trim switch on the aileron/rudder trimcontrol panel operates
the electricallydriven trim actuator (271210). The actuator operates in series
with the rudder control system to supply rudder trim.
C. Rudder PowerControl System
(1) The rudder powercontrol system has three independent power control units (PCU)
which are mechanically controlled and hydraulically actuated. These PCUs control
the rudder position in response to mechanical input signals.
D. Rudder ControlSurface System
(1) The rudder controlsurface system contains the rudder and the rudder position
transmitter. The rudder supplies yaw control of the aircraft. The transmitter supplies
continuous rudder position data to the engine indication and crew alerting system
(EICAS)
Refer to Figure 2.
A. Rudder pedal movement is transmitted through the rudder control system to the input of
the PCUs, which move the rudder to the desired position. The rudder position
transmitter, located at the rudder bottom hinge, transmits rudder position data to the
EICAS (314100). A transducer (located on the copilots rudderpedal frontpivot
assembly) sends rudderpedal position signals to the the nosewheel steering
B. Rudder trim is achieved through the operation of the rudder trim switch which is located
on the aileron/rudder trimcontrol panel. This switch controls the operation of the rudder
trim actuator. The actuator operates in series with the rudder control system to give
rudder trim. The actuator also supplies rudder (trim) position data to the EICAS
C. Two yaw dampers operate in series with the rudder control system to supply yaw
stability of the aircraft. The actuators of these yaw dampers are controlled by the auto
flightcontrol system (221100). The yaw dampers are located between the output of
the rudder trim actuator and the input of the PCUs.
