Poe Project
BY FISHER BRIGGS Masque of Red Death
This short story by poe is about a plague
that kills many people outside while the rich hide behind their big fancy walls but little do they know they dont have long to live. Since time is referenced so often, what is its importance to the story? And what is the meaning behind the hourly striking of the clock? Time symbolizes how much the rich have left to live in the story but they dont know that. A grandfather clock like this one is placed in the story in their palace. Every hour the clock rings and as the hours pass, every hour the clock rings more. When the clock rings, the people get scared and stop what there doing and get silent. They do this because time is the only thing the rich cant buy. What do you make of the colors of the chambers? Furthermore, there is an emphasis on the most eastern chamber being blue and the most western being black velvet and red. Why might this be? Each of the 7 chambers all have different color schemes and they all stand as a symbol. The chambers arranged from east to west symbolize the stages of life. The first chamber being a nice blue color symbolizing birth. The second being purple symbolizing youth and so on. The last room on the end is a very dark room with no lights and a dark red and velvet color scheme. None of the guests went in it and were scared to even go near it. Thats because this room symbolizes death itself.
