Welding Symbols
1
Basic Symbols
Weld Symbol
Welding Symbol
How to distinguish : weld symbol
indicates type of weld and the
welding symbol only requires the
reference line and arrow
2
Welding Symbols
Elements
Reference line
Arrow
Tail
Basic weld symbol
Dimensions and other data
Supplementary symbols
Finish symbols
Specification, process, or other
reference
3
Elements
Reference lines are always drawn
horizontally
Lower side of line is the ARROW side
Upper side of line is the OTHER side
Arrow connects the reference line to the area
to be welded
Arrow may be shown with or with out breaks
When the arrow has a break it always points
toward the member of the joint that is to be
prepared or shaped
4
Elements
Tail is used to indicate processes,
specs, procedures, or supplementary
information
Repeated welding symbols on the
drawing are shown as TYPICAL/TYP
5
Weld Symbol Locations
Direction of arrow doesnt matter
Symbol above reference line is always
OTHER side
Symbol below the reference is always
ARROW side
Symbols on both sides mean welds are
made on both sides
Fillet and groove symbols always
connect the weld to one side of the joint
6
Locations
Side significance of the joint, ARROW
and OTHER
Perpendicular leg of symbol is always
drawn to the left
When only one member of a joint is to
be prepared, the arrow will always have
a break and point toward the member
that is to be prepared
The arrow does not need to be broken if
the preparation is obvious
7
Multiple Reference Lines
Sequence of operations
First operation is nearest the arrow
Subsequent operations are in
sequence going away from the arrow
8
Field Weld and Weld All
-Around
When needed these symbols are
placed at the junction of the arrow
and the reference line
Field welds are not made in the shop
The flag shall be placed at a right
angle to, and at either side of the
reference line at the junction with
the arrow
9
Finishing of Welds
Contours can be flush, flat, convex,
or concave
Finishing methods include chipping,
grinding, hammering, machining and
rolling
The degree of finish shall be noted
as well as unspecified with the letter
U
10
Melt Through Symbol
Used only with a complete joint
penetration with visible root
reinforcement
Symbol is placed on the opposite
side of the weld symbol
Melt- Through dimensions are
placed to the left of the symbol
11
Groove Welds
Depth of Bevel and Groove Weld Size
Location of depth and groove size
are placed to the left of the weld
symbol
A dimension in parentheses is
always closest to the weld symbol
and will always be the weld size
12
Groove Dimensions
Root openings shall be specified
inside the weld symbol and only on
one side of the reference line
Groove angle is specified outside the
weld symbol
13
Length of Groove Welds
Location of the length shall be
specified to the right of the weld
symbol
No length needed for a full length
weld
Specific lengths are to the right of
the weld symbol
14
Intermittent Groove
Welds
Length and pitch, pitch is the center to
center distance of the welds
Pitch is located to the right of the
length dimension
Chain and staggered intermittent
welds are on both sides of the
reference line
Chains are aligned and staggereds are
offset
15
Back and Backing Welds
Symbols are identical
Back weld is made after and backing is
similar to a backing bar or chill ring
Both are on the opposite side of weld
symbol
Back weld symbol is placed on subsequent
reference line if there are multiple lines
Backing is specified in the tail when single
line is used
16
Fillet Welds
Dimension location, such as size and
length & pitch etc., are the same as
groove welds
There are no depth of bevel
measurements for this joint
configuration
Unequal legs shall be drawn as such
x , weld orientation is not specified
and will be shown on the drawing
