Beginning
SORRY FOR THE SPOILERS
Movie starts off in 1929 with Nick Carraway as a World War I veteran receiving
treatment for alcoholism
He talks about Gatsby being the most hopeful man he had ever met
Nicks Dr. suggests he write down all of his thoughts since Nick really enjoyed
writing
That is when he began to write about the story on how he met Gatsby
Nick moves into a small house next to Gatsbys mansion
At a dinner at his cousin Daisys house Nick meets Jordan
Jordan tells Nick that Tom, Daisys husband has a mistress who lives in the valley
of ashes which is a dumping site
Nick later receives an invitation to one of Gatsbys extravagant parties
Middle
Gatsby offers Nick a ride to town for lunch on day
On the way, Gatsby tells Nick he is a graduate from Oxford and that he
comes from a wealthy Midwestern family (which turn out to be lies)
Jordan then tells Nick that Gatsby and Daisy had a relationship many years ago and
Gatsby was still in love with her
Nick finds out that Gatsby threw the parties in hope that she would attend one day
Gatsby then asks Nick to invite Daisy for Tea so he can meet her
After they meet, Gatsby and Daisy begin an affair
Daisy tells Gatsby that she wants to run away with him
During the luncheon, where Daisy is planning to tell Tom about Gatsby, Tom
becomes suspicious of their relationship
Daisy suggests they go to the Plaza Motel
Tom drives Nick and Jordan in Gatsby's car, while Gatsby drives Daisy in Tom's car.
Tom stops for gas at George's garage (the husband of Toms mistress)
George tells him that he and Myrtle are moving because he suspects Myrtle is being
unfaithful
The Grand Finale
When they arrive at The Plaza, Gatsby tells Tom about his affair with Daisy
Daisy confesses she is in love with Gatsby but she also says she loved Tom for a
while
Both Gatsby and Daisy leave The Plaza
On the other hand, when Myrtle and George are having an argument, Myrtle sees
the car Tom was in earlier (which actually turns out to be Gatsbys yellow car) and
runs toward it resulting in a fatal accident where she dies
Tom then tells George that the car belonged to Gatsby and that he suspects Gatsby
was Myrtle's lover
Nick finds out that Daisy was the one that ran into Myrtle and Gatsby intends to
take the blame
Nick overhears Daisy accepting Tom's promise to take care of everything, but Nick
doesnt tell Gatsby
Gatsby admits to Nick that he was born penniless
and that his real name is James Gatz
The Grand Finale Part II
The morning after the accident, Gatsby is waiting for Daisys call
She was never planning to call Gatsby and let him know about the change of plans
While certainly ambitious and every bit as visually dazzling as one might expect
Baz Luhrmanns The Great Gatsby emphasizes visual splendor at the expense of its
source materials vibrant heart Rotten Tomatoes
Baz Luhrmanns The Great Gatsby is the first must-see film of Hollywoods summer
season, if for no other reason than its jaw-dropping evocation of Roaring 20s New York
in 3D, no less New York Post Lou Lumenick
Its an expressionist work, a story reinvented to the point of total self-invention,
polished to a handsome sheen and possessing no class or taste beyond the kind you
can buy. And those are the reasons to love it Village Voice Stephanie Zacharek
This is a film which takes classic source material and imbues it on screen with a sense
of wonder commensurate to its prior form, perhaps offering an even more visceral
impression of the possibilities inherent to this beautiful, tragic world Slant Magazine
