p2c2 Progressmeasurement

The document describes a method for measuring progress on 3D CAD projects using a three step methodology of assigning weights to milestones, quality of supporting information, and complexity. It demonstrates tracking progress against milestones to help explain delays and keep the status of large 3D models visible.

Discovering the POWER
International IGUG 1999
Synopsis
Has your office ever suffered from black box
syndrome ? Have you ever had to explain why
design progress has flat lined ? At least on the
board everyone can see whats going on, and we
can issue lots of paper.

This presentation offers some simple, yet

scientific ideas to help progress and control 3D
CAD projects. It will show how the status of the
model should be linked to key milestones and to
the quality of the supporting information.

Purpose of Presentation

Demonstrate one proven scientific method

exists, that works for us.
Encourage input from and build
confidence for Clients, Project
Management, Project Controls, and
Construction.
Provide a forum for debate and capture
other ideas on best practice in this area.

Need for such measurement

Now with the bulk of the time spent

building the 3D model and the isos.
being generated all at the end of the
project, a billing mode needs to be
developed that is based on progress
in completing the model

3 Step methodology
Milestone weighting

Quality weighting

Complexity weighting

Choose number of steps to suit project

mbigug.ppt. 3DCAD progress measurement. M. Brooks, Parsons, London. 8
Basis for tracking - Step 1
Establish milestone weightings:
Manhours by discipline, to follow the 3D
workflow :-
Database set-up - 5%.
Civil/Structural/Undergrounds - 23%
Piping - 43%
Isometrics - 1%
See progress log slide for full listing
mbigug.ppt. 3DCAD progress measurement. M. Brooks, Parsons, London. 9
Basis for tracking - Step 2
Establish quality weightings :
Progress input against estimated
quantities, then apply a factors to reflect
the quality of information available :-
Status of P&IDs ( 10%, 50%, 75%, 95%, 100%)
Status of equip. data ( 10%, 50%, 75%, 95%, 100%)
Status of design verification: material checks,
clash check, design reviews, stress analysis.

Incorporate into procedures
The CAD Co-ordinator will keep the Lead Piping Engineer up to date with the
status of the equipment model, by means of a progress log (see Attachments)
updated at least once every 2 weeks from database reports, and marked up copy
of the modelbase index drawing. Users will estimate the number of equipment
items in each modelbase and as modelling progresses enter the status of each
equipment item modelled in the equipment status field of the attribute data as
follows:

Block model 10%

Data sheet 50%
Vendor print 75%
Final vendor print 95%
No holds / nozzles checked 100%

Once items are 100% they should be approved in the model. This visibly
changes the colour of the item and disables any attempt to modify.

Each equipment modelbase shown on the modelbase index drawing will be

divided into the 4 sections shown below and tracked by colouring each section
as the project progresses:

Equipment modelling status.

Nozzle orientation status.
Plot Plan status.
Nozzle report checked.

The progress log and modelbase index drawing should be displayed in a

prominent position within the project task force area.

Additional work
Never stand still, continuously review for
improvements and best practice :-
Measurement of C/S/A & E&I.
Automate into Project Control systems.
Cultural change to review model not paper.
Extend method into the construction.
Measurement is not a substitute for experience.
