My Inquiry Project

Brianna's inquiry project explores the concept of numbers through a fairy tale. The story features Pi as the protagonist who learns about his origins from the great mathematician ruler. Pi teams up with the diameter to save their village from a dragon using their combined numerical powers. The project was aimed at elementary school children to teach math concepts in a fun, creative way and foster appreciation for the history of numbers and mathematicians.

MY INQUIRY PROJECT

OVERVIEW
I. The Concept of Numbers
I. Why I picked the topic I did
II. Product
I. Genre I chose and why I chose it
II. As well as a sneak peak to what my product is
III. Audience
I. Why I focused on this specific group of people and what I was hoping to get
out of my product
THE CONCEPT OF NUMBERS
Egypt
Reason
Pi
Desire to understand where the very
principles came from and whether it was Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
a natural law or merely a man made tool division
Geometry, algebra, and pythagreom
Early numbers
theorem
Recognition of the difference between Greece
one and many Built upon much of what the Egyptians
Counting using fingers, toes, and with started
stones Zero

Bases Appeared independently, possibly in

Base 2, 3, 10, and 60 India, and can be used in any base
system
Base 5 is thought to be the earliest
Symbolizes the concept of nothing
PRODUCT
Fairy Tale story:
Protagonist: Pi
Antagonist: Society
Exposition: Our main character is first seen walking through the city for an
unknown destination.
Rising Action:
He bumps into a diameter and takes a liking to her but because they are of two
different worlds they are unable to be together.
He decides to go see the great ruler to see if he can figure out where he came
from so he can make a case to diameters father, circle.
He runs into diameter of his way to the castle and they continue the journey
together
PRODUCT CONTINUED
Fairy Tale story
Climax:
He meets with the great ruler who he learns is a mathematician among a long line of past
mathematicians. He learns he was number long in the making that many labored over
before him and that he is still not completely finished being created.
Once he learns of his importance he happily returns to the village that he once hated
alongside diameter
Falling Action:
When he returns he finds that the village is being attacked by a big, fat dragon but realizes
that if he combines with diameter they will create a number that would be strong enough to
squeeze the circumference of the dragon and pop him like a balloon, saving the village.
Closing:
And the village lived happily ever after in harmony as well as diameter and pi, making many
more numbers along the way.
AUDIENCE
Children
Late elementary and possibly early middle school
Focus on school children that struggle in math and this story might be another way to look at
many of the confusing concepts and principles in mathematics.

Reason:
There was a lot of information I wanted to get across by writing this story:
I wanted students to know where the numbers they use everyday come from
I also wanted them to develop a new appreciation for all the hard work mathematicians went through
to make the mathematical operations possible
I decided on a fairy tale story for several reasons:
It was fun to write
Its creative and imaginative, something young children have an abundance of
Its also a way to make math fun and exciting
THE END
I hope you have learned something new and interesting along the way as
well.
