Valve

Valves are used to control or check the flow of liquids and gases through openings. They work by opening and closing passages. There are various types of valves including swing valves, lift valves, and screw valves. Common valves used on ships include check valves, globe valves, gate valves, and butterfly valves. Safety valves and relief valves are used to relieve excess pressure in vessels.

SYSTEMS AND AUXILIARIES

VALVES
1. Description. Valve is a piece of
mechanism mainly used for controlling or
checking the flow of liquid or gasses
through a passage by opening and closing
it. Basically valves and cocks are having
different shaped bodies furnished with
flanged or screwed ends for connecting /
joining pipes with internal passageways of
the valve. It is so arranged that they can
be restricted or close the passage.
SYSTEMS AND AUXILIARIES

In valves it is done by lowering, raising or

rotating a disc in relation with seating
surface and in cocks turning a plug 90-
deg./ right angles does it.

3. Classification of valves . Valves may
be classified into the following groups or
types according to the action of the flow
controlling elements or main valve.
(a) Swing type.
(b) Lift type.
(c) Slide type.
(d) Rotate type.
(e) Squeezing type.

5. Check Valves. They are non-return
valves and give one way flow and
automatic in operation on account ofthe
pressure of the liquid. They are classified
as :-
(a) Swing check valves
(b) Lift check valves
SYSTEMS AND AUXILIARIES

VALVES
In swing check valves, hinged flap is
arranged and in lift check valves a lifting
ball, disc or piston is arranged. Swing
check valves are used to provide a flow in
one direction and to prevent a back
flooding in the line or vessel, generally in
the large pipe lines. Lift check valves are
used in smaller pipe lines and in high
pressure systems for the same purpose.

6. Screw Down Valves. A screw down
disc is arranged right angle to axis of the pipe
line in this valve. Valve is lowering and rising
perpendicular to the seat. Body may be
designed to oblique or round shape.
Generally they are used for controlling and
isolating purposes in liquid and gasses. Non-
rising spindle arrangement is provided to
subject under correctly controlled or in rod
gearing systems (sea water system) and also
for installation in congested places.

The discs are designed in three types :-

(a) Conventional type
(b) Plug type
(c) Composition type

7. Screw Down Non Return Valves . It

is also known as flood valve. It is similar to
screw down valve except that the bottle has
a longer neck and having an expansion
chamber on the valve. When this spindle is
in open position the valve slides up the neck
of the bottle when the pump is drawing and
valve falls back on its seating when the
suction is lost. They are installed in the
suction leads to ensure the pump being kept
flooded.

8. Screw Down Needle Valves .

Screw down needle is used in this
valve. It is useful for fine controlling as in
refrigeration and Air conditioning plants.

9. Diaphragm valves . A flexible

diaphragm is used in place of a metallic
disc or valves. It can handled many type
of fluids except steam. Due to its glandless
construction and absence of sealing
problem it is broadly used for controlling
and isolating purposes. A straight through
diaphragm valve is suitable in various
fluids.

10.Gate Valves .
They have a vertical shaped body
having a circular opening at the downward
furnished with seats (parallel or taper) to
their inner to suit valve faces or sides. A
gate (valve) is moving up and down right
angle to the flow by a screwed spindle
working in a square nut. They give an
unrestricted flow and offer less frictional
losses.

Gate Valves are divided into two

classes according to the design
of gate as :
(a) Wedge gate or Sluice
valves
(b) Parallel gate or parallel
slide valves

SYSTEMS AND AUXILIARIES

VALVES
Wedge gates are used for full opening or
full closing purposes. The velocity (impact)
of the fluid against half opening of gate
creates vibration, result is damage and
thus they are not advised to use for
controlling or throttling purposes. Parallel
slide valves are refined designed of sluice
valve and is used in gas, steam for
stopping and controlling purposes.

11. Butterfly Valves. The full bore-
straight through flow arrangement of this
valve gives excellent flow characteristics
and low pressure drop. The valve is quick
acting if required since only a quarter turn
of the spindle is required to move the
valve from fully open to fully closed
position. Because of its simplicity it is
widely used in cargo and ballast lines and
suitable in clean fluids.

12. Reducing Valves . Reducing
valve is an automatic throttle valve used
for where low pressure steam for heating
or process is taken from high pressure
mains. The function of the reducing valve
is to reduce from one level of pressure to
another and to maintain the reduced
pressure on the down stream side within
limits irrespective fluctuations in the inlet
pressure or change in the flow demand.
Once set they are automatic in operation.

13. Safety and Relief valves.
They are used to relieve an excess
pressure in all vessels. A safety valve
automatically discharges if the pressure
exceeds beyond a pre-determined safe
pressure. The relief valves are similar in
action as safety valves to relieve the
excess pressure in the line or vessels to
outside or back to the main linen.

14. Plug Valves or Cocks . They
are straight through or right angled or
open bottomed as required in the system.
The plug may be tapered or parallel or
ball shaped and tightness is achieved by
grinding the plug to the seating of the
body.
