OPENING STATEMENT
In HDF 190, I learned a lot about leadership and myself.
Among the many things I learned, my strengths, values,
and who I am as a leader. This class gave me knowledge
that I will be able to utilize in the future to be successful.
SECTION 1
SELF LEADERSHIP
In HDF 190, we took a Strengths Quest quiz to find our top strengths to find our leadership style. My top five
strengths were, competition, strategic, achiever, ideation, and significance. I see this in me all over the place when I
make everything a competition which can work to my benefit and can also be a problem. I also always think of
everything in a strategic way which often causes me to overthink things. If I set my mind to something, I will get it,
and thats where achiever comes from. I am always coming up with new ideas and trying to make what I do
significant to myself and others. My VIAs are Leadership, perseverance, creativity, bravery, and curiosity. I have
always been a natural leader and try to be one wherever I am. Perseverance relates to me because I always push
through all barriers that prevent me from reaching my goal. I think of things differently than other and thats the
creativity in me. This allows me to find options other people dont think of. Bravery allows me to never back down
from a challenge or doing things my own way. Finally curiosity is one of my VIAs because if I find something I dont
understand, I will figure it out and learn all about it. At YLT, while I was a participant, I was taught many things about
leadership and being a leader in general. While I was on staff, I learned what type of leader I was by teaching the
different ways and connecting them to personal experiences. Just talking them out gave me the opportunity to
discover what type of leader I am.
SECTION 2
Leadership Theory and Models
In HDF 190, we learned about Tuckmans stages of group development, forming, storming, norming, performing, and
adjourning. Forming begins when the group first meets and there is high energy and everyone is new. Storming is
when they start hitting bumps and find out what they dont like about each other. The energy is low and people start
getting frustrated. Norming is when the group is getting over their differences and starting to find the solution. Energy
is starting to go back up and the group is starting to become a real team. Performing is when they are all working
together as a team. The energy is high and they are starting to become more efficient because they know each other
much better. Finally adjourning when everyone celebrates. The group did what they came together to do and are now
coming together to reflect. I first learned of this before HDF 190 in YLT, but without adjourning. First I learned about it
as a participant and then I taught it as a staff member. We specifically placed certain activities and planned certain
discussions to get each group through these phases as well as learn about them and recognize when each stage is
happening.
SECTION 3
Inclusive Leadership / Diversity and its application to leadership
In HDF 190, we learned about the relational leadership model which consists of 5 components with
three sections in each. The sections are knowing being and doing, knowing is understanding the
component, being is believing the component, and doing is the skills within the component. The
first leadership component is inclusive which means knowing yourself and others, believing in
fairness and believing everyone can make a difference, and having listening and developing talent
skills.
SECTION 4
Leadership Theory and Models Part 2
In HDF 190, we learned about the relational leadership model which consists of 5 components with
three sections in each. The sections are knowing being and doing, knowing is understanding the
component, being is believing the component, and doing is the skills within the component. The first
leadership component is inclusive which means knowing yourself and others, believing in fairness and
believing everyone can make a difference, and having listening and developing talent skills. The
second is empowerment which is knowing how to empower someone and the impact of empowerment,
believing that everyone has something to offer and concern for growth, and be able to improve other
peoples skills as well as encouraging others. Third is purposeful, where you understand the role of a
goal or vision, have a positive attitude, and be able to envision and identify goals. After that comes
ethical and that includes development of values, making ethical decisions, being socially responsible,
and being trustworthy and responsible. Lastly is process oriented, and for that you need the knowledge
of group process as well as knowing your community. Also, included with that is putting in high quality
effort and trusting the process, as well as being able to collaborate and reflect.
SECTION 5
(Interpersonal and Organizational Concepts and Skills)
My Eagle Project was designing and building a playground climbing wall for a park in my town. I
spent a lot of time with a family friend who is a construction worker. He knew everything that
needed to be done so the wall was safe but didnt take over the project. After he helped, I gathered
a bunch of volunteers and we started working on the wall. I lead my team and together we were
able to finish the project. Each work day I had a specific goal in mind. For example, the first day I
wanted to get at least halfway done with digging the holes. In addition, I had personal goals I
wanted to achieve such as improving my leadership skills. Most of my helpers were younger scouts
because we recently got a good amount of them to join our troop, and they were full of energy. It
was hard to keep them on track but I improved my leadership to be able to keep the kids energy
contained and keep them focused.
