PRESENTATION
Food conservation and preservation go hand in
hand. Food conservation is protecting, reserving,
and safeguarding the supply, safekeeping, and
storing the present supply for future use.
Filipino boys and girls are aware of the value of food
conservation and preservation considering the ever
increasing price of food and the dwindling supply
availability in the market.
SUGGESTIONS FOR PROPER
FOOD CONSERVATION AND
GOOD NUTRITION
1.Reduce intake of rice by serving and eating more fruits and vegetables.
2.Try substituting rice by serving boiled corn on the cob,sweet potatos,boiled
bananas (saba),or cassava (kamoteng-kahoy) and see how every one welcome
the once-in-a-while change.
3.Avoid leftovers and wasteful consumption by not cooking more than what is
normally required.plan your menus weekly or daily.
4.when helping yourself at table,do not get more than the amountof food you can
actually consume on your plate.
5.cook food properly to get maximum nutritive content and prevent possible
health hazards caused by uncooked meat,seafoods,and some vegetables.
6.avoid burning food,particulary rice.if you are not using a rice cooker,tyr to line
the bottom of the cooking fan with banana leaves and cook rice in low fire or
reduce heat as soon as boiling point is reached.
7.know the facts about addictives,preservatives,residues, and contaminants
present if food arising at the stage from growth,harvesting,transporting, in the
case of vegetables;from slaughter house to processing and storage to market, in
the case of meat;and from fisherfolks,transporting and storage for fish and other
seafoods.
8.meat,fish, and other seafoods easily rot if not preserved by deep
freezing.stock only enough for family and food business according to
duration required.
9.check grocery items for ingridients, date of expiry, salt and fat
content,meat blends, etc. for health purpose.
10.Peel,chop ,grate,shred,or slice foods just before serving or cooking to
avoid lost of nutrients.
11.grow your own vegetable garden and fruit trees in your surroundings.
12.try raising chicken for meat and eggs,cows and goats for meat and
milk.
Aims of food preservation
1.To improve the general health of the family and those you intend to
serve in community
2.To prevent waste of perishable foods by keeping them for future use.
3.To help stabilize price of food by your efforts to regulate the supply in
the market
4.To augment family income in a pleasurable way
5.To assist in reducing the amount of imported foods by competing with
locally-made ones if more people are engaged in food preservation.
