Design a circular tank using IS


3370 Part-II: 2009 having
flexible base and capacity of
450000 litres. The depth of
water is 4 m including a free
board of 200 mm. Use M30
grade concrete and Fe500
reinforcement.
Solution: 1. Dimensions of tank

Effective depth of water tank from capacity point of view = 4.0 - 0.2 =
3.8 m

If D is inside diameter of tank

D = 12.282 m

Providing diameter of tank 12.30 meter


2. Design of section

Taking unit weight of water w = 9810 N/m3

Max. Hoop tension = wHD/2


= (9810 * 4* 12.3)/2
= 241326 N/m at base

Permissible stress in steel = 130 N/m2

Area of hoop steel required = 241326/130 =1856.5 mm2


say 1857 mm2 per meter height

Spacing between bars using 20 mm dia. Bars


Spacing required = (1000*314)/1857 =
= 169 mm
Hence provide hoops at a spacing of 160 mm c/c

Ash provided = (1000*314)/160 1962.5 mm2

If T is the thickness of wall we provided. The permissible steress in


concrete should not exceed 1.5 N/mm2

T=144.53 mm
Hence provide wall thickness T = 160 mm; throughout the
height of wall.

Providing minimum reinforcement of 0.24% at the top in


each surface zone
Total area of steel = (160*0.24*1000)/100
= 384 mm2
Providing half of the total reinforcement, 192 mm 2 in each
surface zone
or
If the thickness is less than 200 mm the calculated
reinforcement may be provided on one surface zone.

Providing spacing 160 mm (less than thickness of wall


and/or 300 mm)
3. Vertical reinforcement

Distribution and temperature reinforcement is provided in the vertical


direction.
Area of steel = (0.24*160*1000)/1000
= 384 mm2

Providing 10 mm diameter bars


spacing required = 78.5*1000/384
= 204.4 mm2

Hence provide 10 mm diameter bars at a spacing of 200 mm


c/c in vertical direction on outer face.

This will also serve the purpose of tieing the hoop


reinforcement.
4. Design of tank floor

Since the tank floor is resting on ground throughout, provide a


nominal thickness of 150 mm.

Minimum area of steel required (Ast) = (150*1000*0.24)/100


= 360 mm2 in each direction
Provide half of the reinforcement on each surface zone as
180 mm2

Providing 8 mm diameter bars


Spacing of bars required = 1000*50/ 180
277 mm
Hence provide 8 mm diameter bars at 250 mm c/c distance
in both directions at top and bottom surface zones.

The floor slab will rest on 75 mm thick layer of lean


concrete (Grade M15) with a separation layer of
polyethylene sheets
