Impulse Response Model of A Multipath Channel

The document models a mobile radio channel as a linear filter with a time-varying impulse response. The impulse response characterizes the channel and can be used to predict performance for different mobile communication systems. The channel between a transmitter and receiver moving at a constant velocity can be modeled as a time-invariant system. The received signal is the convolution of the transmitted signal and the time-varying channel impulse response, which depends on both time and delay. Therefore, the mobile radio channel can be modeled as a linear time-varying system.

Impulse response model of a

multipath channel
Here mobile radio channel is modeled as linear filter
with time varying impulse response, the impulse
response is useful characterization of channel since it
may be used to predict and compare the
performance of many different mobile
communication systems and transmission bandwidth
for a particular mobile channel condition.
From the figure the receiver moves along the ground
at some constant velocity v. for fixed position d, the
channel between transmitter and receiver can be
modeled as time Invariant system.
That is the channel impulse response can be
expressed as h(d,t)
Let x(t) represent the transmitted signal , then
the receiver signal y(d,t) at the position d can
be expressed as convolution of x(t) and h(d,t).
Since receiver moves along the ground at
constant
velocity v the position of the receiver can be
expressed
As
d = vt
Substituting we get

y (d , t ) x(t ) h( d , t ) x( )h(d , t )d

t
y (vt, t )

x ( ) h ( vt, t ) d
Since v is constant y(vt,t) is just a function of t therefore
t
y (vt, t ) x( )h(vt, t )d x(t ) h(vt, t ) x(t ) h(d , t )

From above equation it is clear that mobile radio channel

Can be modeled as linear time varying channel.
As v is constant over short distances and
X(t)-transmitted band pass waveform
Y(t)- the received waveform
H(t , )- impulse response of time varying multiple radio
Channel and it is function of both t and .
- represents channel multi path delay for fixed value of t
t- time variation due to motion

Therefore above equation can be expressed as

y (t ) x( )h(t , )d

x (t ) h(t , )
