Hard Shut in

This document outlines shut-in procedures for drilling rigs in different situations: hard shut-in while drilling, tripping, or out of the hole; and fast (panic) shut-in while drilling, tripping, or out of the hole. The procedures include calling an alert, closing appropriate BOP equipment, opening choke line valves to a closed choke, verifying choke closure, monitoring pressures and gains, notifying supervisors, and making preparations to control the well.

Hard Shut-in Procedure - Drilling Fixed Rig

1. Call Alert! Hoist off bottom with pumps running and space
out with tool joint above the drill floor.
2. Stop pumps.
3. Close BOP (Annular or Pipe Rams).

4. Open choke line HCR valves.

5. Verify the choke is closed. (If not positive shut-off, close

downstream valve.)

6. Read and record SIDPP, SICP and pit gain every minute
until stabilized.

7. Call Supervisors.
8. Prepare to kill the well.
Hard Shut-in Procedure - Tripping Fixed Rig
1. Position upper tool joint at table and set slips.

2. Install a full opening drill string safety valve and close it.

3. Close the BOP (Annular or pipe rams).

4. Open the choke line HCR valves.

5. Verify the choke is closed. (If not positive shut-off, close

downstream valve.)

6. Read and record SICP and trip tank gain every minute until
stabilized.

7. Call the Supervisors.

8. Prepare to strip into the hole.

Hard Shut-in Procedure - Out of the Hole
1. Call Alert!

2. Close shear/blind rams.

3. Open HCRs against a closed choke.

4. Verify the choke is closed. (If not positive shut-off, close

downstream valve.)

5. Read and record SICP and trip tank gain every minute until
stabilized.

6. Notify Supervisors.

7. Make preparation to control the well.

Fast Shut-in (Panic) Procedure - Drilling Fixed Rig

1. Call Alert! Stop rotating.

2. Stop pumps.
3. Close Annular

4. Open choke line HCR valves to a closed choke.

5. Verify the choke is closed. (If not positive shut-off, close

downstream valve.)
6. Strip out to lower kelly cock.

7. Read and record SIDPP, SICP and pit gain every minute
until stabilized.

8. Call Supervisors.

9. Prepare to kill the well.

Fast Shut-in (Panic) Procedure - Tripping Fixed
Rig

2. Install a full opening drill string safety valve and close it.

3. Close the BOP pipe rams (especially if the string hydraulics

out).

4. Open the choke line HCR valves to a closed choke.

5. Verify the choke is closed. (If not positive shut-off, close

downstream valve.)

6. Read and record SICP and trip tank gain every minute until
stabilized.

7. Call the Supervisors.
