By remaining silent, inner silence is

lovingly absorbed deep within.

The hunger of the hungry is not


appeased, even by piling up loads
of worldly goods.

Hundreds of thousands of clever


tricks, but not even one of them
will go along with you in the end.

And how can the veil of illusion be
torn away?

obey the Hukam of His Command,
and walk in the Way of His Will. ||

By His Command, bodies are


created; His Command cannot be
described.

hukmee hovan aakaar


hukam na kehiaa jaaee
hukmI hovin jIA hukim imlY

By His Command, souls come into


being; by His Command, glory and
greatness are obtained.

hukam milai vaddiaaee
hukmI auqmu nIcu hukim iliK duK

By His Command, some are high
and some are low; by His Written
Command, pain and pleasure are
obtained.

Some, by His Command, are


blessed and forgiven; others, by His
Command, wander aimlessly
forever.

Everyone is subject to His


Command; no one is beyond His
Command.

Command, does not speak in ego.

Some sing of His Power-who has

Some sing of His Gifts, and know


His Sign and Insignia.

Some sing of His Glorious Virtues,


Greatness and Beauty.

gaavai ko gun vaddiaaeeaa chaar


gwvY ko ividAw ivKmu vIcwru ]

Some sing of knowledge obtained


of Him, through difficult
philosophical studies.

gaavai ko vidiaa vikham veechaar


gwvY ko swij kry qnu Kyh ]

Some sing that He fashions the


body, and then again reduces it to
dust.

gaavai ko saaj karé tan kheh


gwvY ko jIA lY iPir dyh ]

Some sing that He takes life away,


and then again restores it.

gaavai ko jeea lai phir deh


gwvY ko jwpY idsY dUir ]

Some sing that He seems so very


far away.

gaavai ko jaapai disai door

Some sing that He watches over us,


face to face, ever-present.

There is no shortage of those who


preach and teach.

kathnaa kathee na aavai tott

Millions upon millions offer millions


of sermons and stories.

The Great Giver keeps on giving,


while those who receive grow weary
of receiving.

Throughout the ages, consumers


consume.

jugaa jugantar khaahee khaahi

The Commander, by His Command,


leads us to walk on the Path.

O Nanak, He blossoms forth,


Carefree and Untroubled. ||3||

True is the Master, True is His


Name-speak it with infinite love.

give to us"", and the Great Giver
gives His Gifts.

the Darbaar of His Court?

In the Amrit Velaa, the ambrosial
hours before dawn, chant the True
Name, and contemplate His
Glorious Greatness.

amrit velaa sach naao vaddiaaee veechaar


krmI AwvY kpVw ndrI moKu

By the karma of past actions, the


robe of this physical body is
obtained. By His Grace, the Gate of
Liberation is found.

karmee aavai kaprraa nadree mokh duaar

O Nanak, know this well: the True


One Himself is All. ||4||

Treasure of Excellence.

Sing, and listen, and let your mind


be filled with love.

gaaveeai suneeai man rakheeai bhaao

Your pain shall be sent far away,


and peace shall come to your
home.

dukh parhar sukh ghar lai jaaé


gurmuiK nwdM gurmuiK vydM
gurmuiK rihAw smweI ]
Following the Guru’s Word one can
listen to the Sound-current of the
Naad, and wisdom is obtained.
Through the Guru's Word one
realises Vaheguru is all-pervading.

gurmukh naadun(g) gurmukh vedun(g)


gurmukh rehiaa sumaaee
guru eIsru guru gorKu brmw guru
pwrbqI mweI ]

For a true follower of the Guru, his


Guru is like Shiva, Brahma and
Vishnu and their spouses.
Therefore, one need not worship any deity and
instead respect follow his own Guru.

gur paarbatee maaee

kQnu n jweI ]

Even knowing Vaheguru, I cannot


describe Him; He cannot be
described in words.

jé ho jaanaa aakhaa naahee


kehnaa kathan na jaaee

The Guru has given me this one


understanding:

guraa ek dehi bujhaaee


sBnw jIAw kw ieku dwqw so mY
ivsir n jweI ]5]

there is only the One, the Giver of


all souls. May I never forget Him! ||

sabhnaa jeeaa kaa ek daataa


so mai visar na jaaee
qIriQ nwvw jy iqsu Bwvw ivxu
Bwxy ik nwie krI ]

If I am pleasing to Him, then that is


my pilgrimage and cleansing bath.
Without pleasing Him, what good
are ritual cleansings?

teerath naavaa jé tis bhaavaa


vin bhaané ke naaé karee
jyqI isriT aupweI vyKw ivxu krmw
ik imlY leI ]

I gaze upon all the created beings:


without the karma of good actions,
what are they given to receive?

jetee sirath upaaee vekhaa


vin karmaa ke milai le-ee
miq ivic rqn jvwhr mwixk jy iek
gur kI isK suxI ]

Within the mind are gems, jewels


and rubies, if you listen to the
Guru's Teachings, even once.

mat vich ratan javaahar maanik


jé ek gur kee sikh sunnee
gurw iek dyih buJweI ]

The Guru has given me this one


understanding:

guraa ek dehi bujhaaee


sBnw jIAw kw ieku dwqw so mY
ivsir n jweI ]6]

there is only the One, the Giver of


all souls. May I never forget Him! ||

sabhnaa jeeaa kaa ek daataa


so mai visar na jaaee
jy jug cwry Awrjw hor dsUxI hoie ]

Even if you could live throughout


the four ages, or even ten times
more,

jé jug chaaré aarjaa hor dasoonee hoé


nvw KMfw ivic jwxIAY nwil clY
sBu koie ]

and even if you were known


throughout the nine continents and
followed by all,

navaa khanddaa vich jaaneeai


naal chalai sabh koé
cMgw nwau rKwie kY jsu kIriq jig
lyie ]

with a good name and reputation,


with praise and fame throughout
the world-

changaa naao rakhaae kai


jas keerat jag le-e
jy iqsu ndir n AwveI q vwq n
puCY ky ]

still, if the Lord does not bless you


with His Glance of Grace, then who
cares? What is the use?

jé tis nadar na aave-ee


ta vaat na puchhai ké
kItw AMdir kItu kir dosI dosu
Dry ]

Among worms, you would be


considered a lowly worm, and even
contemptible sinners would hold
you in contempt.

O Nanak, Vaheguru blesses the


unworthy with virtue, and bestows
virtue on the virtuous.

No one can even imagine anyone


who can bestow virtue upon Him. ||

the spiritual status of the Siddhas,
the spiritual teachers, the heroic
warriors, the yogic masters is
achieved.

the reality that Vaheguru, the
Creator, is the supporter of the
earth is known.
Instead of the mythological belief that a white bull
supports the earth.

knowledge of the world, continents
and planets is gained.

One trying to describe it, will have


to repent afterwards.

There is neither the paper and pen


nor the writer,

kaagad kalam na likhanhaar


mMny kw bih krin vIcwru ]

Who can sit and describe the state


of the devotee, who obeys
Vaheguru.

manné kaa behi karan veechaar


AYsw nwmu inrMjnu hoie ]

Such is the Name of the


Immaculate Lord.

One obeying Vaheguru realises this


bliss given by such obedience in

By obeying Vaheguru
consciousness, divine knowledge
and understanding are acquired.

Knowledge of all spheres is


acquired by obeying Vaheguru.

mannai sagal bhavan kee sudh

Believer in Vaheguru does not get


blows of death on the face.

mannai muhi chottaa naa khaaé


mMnY jm kY swiQ n jwie ]

One who obeys Vaheguru will not


be caught by the Messenger of
Death.

mannai jam kai saath na jaaé

Such is the Name of the


Immaculate Lord.

One obeying Vaheguru realises this


bliss given by such obedience in

One who obeys Vaheguru will face


no hindrance in his way.

One who obeys Vaheguru goes to


the next world with honour and
fame.

One who obeys Vaheguru is not


misled (and does not practice
worldly rites and rituals).

mannai mag na chalai panth

One who obeys Vaheguru loves


Truth.

mannai dharam setee sanbandh

Such is the Name of the


Immaculate Lord.

One obeying Vaheguru realises this


bliss given by such obedience in

One who obeys Vaheguru reaches


the door of salvation.

mannai paavehi mokh duaar


mMnY prvwrY swDwru ]

One who obeys Vaheguru reforms


their family members.

mannai parvaarai saadhaar


mMnY qrY qwry guru isK ]

One who obeys Vaheguru swims


(across the world ocean) and
causes true disciples of the Guru to
do so.

mannai tarai taaré gur sikh


mMnY nwnk Bvih n iBK ]

One who who obeys Vaheguru


never has an occasion to beg (from
others).

mannai naanak bhavehi na bhikh


AYsw nwmu inrMjnu hoie ]

Such is the Name of the


Immaculate Lord.

One obeying Vaheguru realises this


bliss given by such obedience in
their mind. ||15||

Saints are supreme and approved


(by Vaheguru).

panch parvaan panch pardhaan


pMcy pwvih drgih mwnu ]

Saints gain honour in the Court of


Vaheguru.

panché paavehi dargehi maan


pMcy sohih dir rwjwnu ]

Vaheguru’s saints look beautiful in


His Court.

panché sohehi dar raajaan


pMcw kw guru eyku iDAwnu ]

Saints concentrate their minds on


the Guru alone.

panchaa kaa gur eik dhiaan


jy ko khY krY vIcwru ]

One may reflect on Vaheguru and


describe Him as much as possible;

jé ko kehai karai veechaar


krqy kY krxY nwhI sumwru ]

Yet the doings of Vaheguru cannot


be counted.

karté kai karnai naahee sumaar


DOlu Drmu dieAw kw pUqu ]

The (mythical bull representing


piety) is the outcome of the
compassion (of Vaheguru).
Note: The mythical bull is believed to support the
Earth from underneath.

dhaul dharam de-eiaa kaa poot


sMqoKu Qwip riKAw ijin sUiq ]

It (Vaheguru’s compassion) holds


the earth at its position with
patience.

santokh thaap rakhiaa jin soot


jy ko buJY hovY sicAwru ]

One will be called true if they


realise this (and),

jé ko bujhai hovai sachiaar


DvlY aupir kyqw Bwru ]

If he can know as to how much


weight is place on the supposed
bull.

dhavlai upar kethaa bhaar


DrqI horu prY horu horu ]

Beyond this earth there are many


more and more earths.

dhartee hor parai hor hor


iqs qy Bwru qlY kvxu joru ]

What powers bears their load from


underneath? (not the supposed
bull, but Vaheguru’s laws).

tis té bhaar talai kavan jor


jIA jwiq rMgw ky nwv ]

There is the ever flowing pen of


Vaheguru.

jeea jaat rangaa ké naav


sBnw iliKAw vuVI klwm ]

It inscribed various kinds, colours,


and names of all things.

sabhunaa likhiaa vurree kalaam


eyhu lyKw iliK jwxY koie ]

Even if some know how to write this


account (then),

ehu lekhaa likh jaanai koé


lyKw iliKAw kyqw hoie ]

Just imagine what a huge scroll it


would take!

lekhaa likhiaa ketaa hoé


kyqw qwxu suAwilhu rUpu ]

What power! What fascinating


beauty!

ketaa taan suaalihu roop


kyqI dwiq jwxY kOxu kUqu ]

And what gifts! Who can know their


extent?

ketee daat jaanai kaun koot


kIqw pswau eyko kvwau ]

You created the vast expanse of the


Universe with One Word!

keetaa pasaao eiko kavaao


iqs qy hoey lK drIAwau ]

Hundreds of thousands of rivers


began to flow.

tis té hoé lakh dareeaao


kudriq kvx khw vIcwru ]

How can Your Creative Potency be


described?

kadrat kavan kehaa veechaar


vwirAw n jwvw eyk vwr ]

I cannot even once be a sacrifice to


You.

vaariaa na jaavaa eik vaar

Whatever pleases You is the only


good done,

jo tudh bhaavai saaee bhalee kaar

You, Eternal and Formless One! ||

Ways of meditations and of those


who meditate upon Vaheguru
lovingly are countless.

Ways of worshipping Vaheguru are


countless and those who practice
penance are countless.

AsMK grMQ muiK vyd pwT ]

Scriptures are countless and those


who can ritually recite the Vedas are
countless.

asankh granth mukh ved paath


AsMK jog min rhih audws ]

Yogis, who in their minds have no


attachment for the world, are
countless.

asankh jog man rehehi udaas


AsMK Bgq gux igAwn vIcwr ]

True devotees, who reflect over the


excellences and knowledge of
Vaheguru, are countless.

asankh bhagat gun giaan veechaar


AsMK sqI AsMK dwqwr ]

Pious humans and those who


distribute charities are countless.

asankh satee asankh daataar


AsMK sUr muh BK swr ]

Countless heroic spiritual warriors,


who bear the brunt of the attack in
battle (who with their mouths eat
steel).

Saints who remain silent and


lovingly meditate continuously on

Vishnu), the Sustainer; and one

(However) it is Vaheguru who
makes things happen according to

disturbance in the mind.

bellows, fan the flames of
meditation, the body's inner heat.
