Cognitivism Learning
Theory
As a teacher it is my responsibility to assess the
amount of knowledge regarding the alphabet letters
that my students currently know. From there I can build
upon their prior knowledge and add in new imperative
information.
It is my job to help them organize their knowledge and
to realize that each letter will be the building blocks of
the creation of words used in everyday tasks.
Feedback will help them improve upon their skills and
to reinforce what skills they have already
accomplished.
Students will be actively involved in the learning
process.
Beginning of the Lesson:
Activating their schema
Beginning the lesson I will show a flashcard that has the letter A on it. I
will then ask a few extension questions to help activate their schema.

Questions:
1. What letter am I holding?
2. What is the picture on it? Do you know of anything else that starts
with A?
3. Does the alphabet start with A?
4. Do any of your names or friends names start with A?
5. What sound does the letter A make?

I then have a short Sesame Street video on the letter A.

Allotted time: 10-15 min.

Story time
After I have activated their schema then
I will read the book Ten apples up on
top By: Dr. Seuss.
As I am going through the book I will ask
the students questions pertaining to the
book and point out all of the a words.
Allotted time: 10 min
Singing

I always love to sing during my circle

time. On my iPad we will watch the
Hooray for A by: StoryBots YouTube
video. We will sing this a few times.

Allotted time: 10 minutes

Centers

After we have finished singing I will

break the class up into three centers
groups. The centers are as follows:
1. Letter A apple sort
2. Stamping letter A with a bingo marker
3. Making an A hat.

Allotted time: 30-45 min.

Letter A Apple Sort

In this activity the student will sort the corresponding apples

into their baskets. This is a great activity to show the students
the difference between upper and lower case A.
Letter A Stamping

Students will take a bingo marker and mark all of the As on

the page. I will give the students feedback during and after
this center.
Alphabet Hat

This is such a cute and fun assignment. Students will use

crayons or markers to color the a words on their headband. I
will then help them glue the two strips together to make a
headband. If it isnt big enough, just staple a sentence strip to
the end of it.
Assessment/ Review

If students finish early in a center then

they can use an iPad or computer to
play on Starfall.com.
Simply click on the ABC link then select the
letter A.
