Phase 1:
Contact the local authorities. Choose a LNO.
Identify the leaders of the demonstration or the
disturbances/riots.
Try to convince the leaders involved to end the
action.

Phase 2:
Seal off the area in order to prevent further people
gathering there.
Isolate the leaders from the rest of the crowd.

Phase 3:
Disperse the smaller groups.
Split the crowd into smaller groups and take control of
these.
If necessary, initiate a curfew and prohibit access to
particular areas or streets.
Always maintain contact with the civilian leaders.

Phase 4:
When crowds split up or disperse:
Commence de-escalation drills on scene.
Talk to the leaders when everything has calmed down,
about how to avoid future riots.

EXAMPLE of a CRC COURSE


Day 1: 8 hours
Basic CRC tactics, use of shield and stick.
Formations- and movement drills.
Vehicle tactics.

Day 2: 8 hours
Advanced CRC, junction taking.
Vehicle and troops in dispersal.
Practical petrol bomb precaution procedures.

Day 3: 8 hours
CRC exercise.
