Production of Lime: A Report

The document discusses the production of lime through the calcination of limestone in a kiln. It presents two cases involving the calculation of fuel ratio by weight and percentage of excess air using data on limestone and gas compositions, as well as products of combustion. The limestone is heated to produce lime and byproducts like carbon dioxide through thermal decomposition reactions. The cases provide information on the limestone and fuel gas compositions, burner gas compositions, and calculations required.

PRODUCTION OF LIME

A REPORT
PRODUCTION OF LIME

Formed from the calcination of limestone

o A mixture of CaCO3, MgCO3 and inerts
o Takes place in a kiln where heat used comes from the
combustion of a fuel

o 3 + 2

o 3 + 2
Analysis depends on amount of N2
o Case I Calculations based on negligible N2 in the fuel
o Case II Calculations based on considerable N2 in the fuel
CASE I

The burning of limestone containing 65% CaCO3, 25%

MgCO3 and 10% inerts, using a gas mixture made up
of 75% ethane and 25% propane produces a burner
gas containing 22.07% CO2, 0.9% CO, 3.02% O2 and
74% N2. Calculate:
a) Fuel ratio by weight
b) % excess air
