Time, Speed and Distance

The document discusses concepts related to speed, time, and distance. It provides formulas for calculating speed, time, and distance in various scenarios. For example, it states that speed equals distance divided by time. It also provides formulas for calculating average speed, relative speed between two objects, and speed conversions between units like km/hr and m/sec. Several word problems with solutions are included that apply these concepts and formulas to scenarios like traveling parts of a journey at different speeds, trains passing each other, and boat speed relative to water current speed.

Time, Speed and Distance

SPEED = DISTANCE/TIME

Speed is nothing but distance covered in unit time.

The units of measurement of speed are

km/hr , m/sec, cm/sec etc.

Distance= Speed X Time

Time = Distance/ Speed

Changing the speed given in km/hr to m/sec
72 km/hr = 72000/60 X60 m/sec
= 20 m/sec
In Short, multiply by 5/18

Changing the speed given in m/sec to km/hr

40 m/sec = 40x60x60/1000 km/hr
= 144 km/hr
In Short, multiply by 18/5
Average Speed
A x km/hr B y km/hr C
d km d km

Average Speed = Total Distance/ Total Time

= (d+d)/(d/x +d/y)
=2xy/(x + y)
If distances are d1 and d2
Average Speed =(d1 +d2)/(d1/x +d2/y)
Relative Speed
A Same Direction B
220 Km
X-60 km/hr. Y-50 km/hr
Relative Speed = 60-50=10 km/hr (Subtract)
Time taken = 220/10 = 22 hours.
Opposite Direction
X Y
Relative Speed = 60+50=110 km/hr (Add)
Time taken = 220/110 = 2 hours
1. A bike covered a distance of 320 km in 8 hours. It covered a
part of the journey at 30 km/hr and remaining part at 70
km/hr. For how much time did it travel at 30 km/hr?
t 8-t
A 30 km/hr C 70 km/hr B

30t + 70(8-t) = 320

-40t =320-560
=-240
t = 6 hours.
2. A car takes 2 hours more to cover a distance of 400 km when
its speed is reduced by 10 km/hr. Find the usual speed.
Solution:
Let the usual speed = s km/hr and usual time = t hours.
Distance covered = st km
Also (s-10)(t+2) =st
st-10t+2s-20 =st
2s =10t+20
s= 5t+10.
Hence (5t+10)t =400
t2 +2t-80=0
(t+10)(t-8) =0 .
Hence t=8 and s = 50 km/hr

3. X,Y and Z run around a circular track with speeds of 36
km/hr, 27 km/hr and 18 km/hr respectively in the same
direction. The track is 1800 meter long. When they will meet
for the first time?
Speed of X = 36 X 5/18=10 m/sec
Speed of Y = 27X 5/18=7.5 m/sec
Speed of Z = 18 X 5/18=5 m/sec

D/x-y = 1800/10-7.5 = 1800/2.5=720 seconds

D/y-z = 1800/7.5 -5= 1800/2.5=720 seconds
LCM = 720 seconds.
Hence they will meet for the first time after 720 seconds or 12
minutes after they start.

4. A train crosses a bridge of length 300 meter in
40 seconds. Find the length of the train if it
runs at 45 km per hour.
Solution
Speed o the train = 45 km/hr
= 45 x 5/18 =12.5 m/sec
Distance covered by the train=12.5 x 40
= 500 m
Length of the train = 500-300 = 200 m
Boats and Streams
Speed of the boat in still water = b km/hr
Speed of the stream current = c km/hr
Upstream speed = (b - c) km/hr = u km/hr
Downstream speed = (b + c) km/hr = d
Solving we get
b =(d + u )/2
c =( d u)/2
5. A mans speed in still water is 20 km per hour. If it
takes a total of 5 hours for him to go to a place 48 km
away and return, then find the speed of the water
current.
Solution:
Let the speed of current be c km/hr.
Upstream speed = 20-c and
Downstream speed =20 + c
Total time = 48/(20 + c ) + 48/(20 - c )=5
i.e. 1920/ (400- c2) =5
c2 = 16 .
Hence c = 4 km/hr
6. A man swims from A to B and back in four and half hours. A block of wood
when allowed to go with the stream from A to B takes 6 hours . What is the
ratio of speed of the man in still water to that of the stream?
Solution:
If the distance between A and B is d km
d/(b + c) + d/( b-c) =9/2
Also d/c =6 d=6c
6c/(b +c) + 6c/(b-c)=9/2
(6bc-6 c2 +6bc + 6c2 )/( b2- c2 )=9/2
9b2-9c2 = 24bc
3b2 -8bc- 3 c2 =0
3b2 -9bc +bc- 3 c2 =0
(3b+c)(b-3c)=0
Hence b =3c
b:c =3:1
