PROPOSAL PT 1

BECKY UNG
TOPIC NAME: EMOJI: THE NEW LANGUAGE

MODE OF DOCUMENTARY: EXPOSITORY

STYLE OF DOCUMENTARY: INFORMAL, ENTERTAINING AND

DEBATABLE

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE: OPEN, NON-LINEAR AND MULTI-STRAND

CHANNEL AND SCHEDULING: 8pm it is not inappropriate enough to be

aired during the watershed but still contains some funny moment that may not be
appropriate for people who are younger

TARGET AUDIENCE: 16+ the audience is mainly young teenagers who are into
texting. This documentary is also highly informative and questions linguistics
which much younger people may find boring or they may be unable to understand

PRIMARY AUDIENCE: YOUNG PEOPLE AND TEENAGERS (16-25)

SECONDARY AUDIENCE: PARENTS AND ADULTS

TOPIC NAME
EMOJI: THE NEW LANGUAGE

This has been chosen as the title because our documentary is

going to be about emoji's and if or if not it can substitute as a
language. This particular title has been chosen because it
sounds intellectual in the fact that it does not just explore the
emoji's but also the linguistics behind it.
PURPOSE
TO INFORM, TO ENTERTAIN, TO INVESTIGATE
The documentary will inform the audience on how
emoji's are used to represent different things, this can take
form in experts and vox pops and it will offer and
investigate different perspectives on whether it should be
used as a language. It will also entertain the audience as
emojis are quite a fun and interesting topic as it is. as it is
aimed at teenagers, they will able to relate to the topic as
they use it from a day to day basis but they will also know
facts that they did not know.
MODE OF
DOCUMENTARY
EXPOSITORY AND PARTICPATORY

This documentary will be expository because it emphasizes the

verbal commentary as the overall topic of the emoji will be argued
for and against. However it will lean to a particular bias (e.g. emojis
should not be used a language) as this is the argumentative logic.
There will also be a preferred meaning which is that emojis can co
exist, alongside the English language but cant be used as a language
on itself and the presenter will be addressing the audience so that
they can question themselves. In turn, this also makes it a
participatory documentary because the presenter will be interacting
with the subjects (e.g. interviews, vox pop).
STYLE OF
DOCUMENTARY
INFORMAL, ENTERTAINING AND DEBATABLE

This documentary will have to be informal and entertaining as

this will maintain the audiences interest. As it is quite a young
audience, if it is too formal it may be boring, especially if it is
associated with emojis which has a stereotype of being fun and
immature. Animations and humour can be used to showcase
this style of documentary. To also make the primary and
secondary audience question themselves, it would need to be
debatable which is why we will add two sides of the argument
and be constantly questioning them.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
OPEN, NON LINEAR AND MULTI STRAND

The documentary will be open because there is no real right or wrong answer. This
will leave the audience to wonder and can spark a debate or realisation after the
documentary has finished. This narrative has proved successful (e.g. supersize me as
they questioned the food industry and it sparked national debate and even changed
the industry)

It will also be non-linear so there will be no order. This is because the topic of
emojis is quite diverse in itself and so it would work better if there would be no
order as it will be constantly making the audience question themselves

It will be multi-strand because as documentary makers, we want to explore different

options; the benefits and negative of using emojis as the English language. It will
also make the documentary interesting as the scenes will be cut making a fast but
steady pace.
CHANNEL AND
SCHEDULING
The channel we will be using is BBC one because the target
audience ranges from over 16 to 40. It is also on free view
meaning everyone with a TV license can access the
documentary. Teenagers and parents can also watch this
together and BBC one focuses on studying a topic

It will be aired at 8pm it is not inappropriate enough to be

aired during the watershed but still contains some funny
moment that may not be appropriate for people who are
younger (e.g. inappropriate emojis)
TARGET AUDIENCE
It will be ages 16- 21. The audience is mainly young
teenagers who are into texting. This documentary is also
highly informative and questions linguistics which much
younger people may find boring or they may be unable to
understand.
PRIMARY AND
SECONDARY AUDIENCE
The primary audience will be young teenagers to young adults
aged (16-21). They will be focused on because they are the
most familiar with emojis and can relate to it the most. They
may also find the humour in the documentary more funny as
they can associate with it.

The secondary audience will be parents and teachers. This is

because they may be interested in finding out what their
children are texting nowadays. Along with technology
advancing, teachers (particularly English) may also want to see
how language develops and how questionable emojis are to the
real English language.
