Identifying signal words from text heard

Providing accurate instructions


Pre-assessment of Target Skills
Annie gave instructions to her children on how to make
sweetened bananas harvested from her backyard in
Barangay Market View. She used signal words to introduce
the steps in a process.

Circle the signal words used in giving instructions.


First, peel 5 pieces of banana (Saba). Cut each into 3
pieces, slightly slanted. Next, boil the bananas in 2 cups of
water until cooked. Then, put sugar and stir until syrup
turns brown. Finally, add Calamansi juice or vanilla.
ADDITION WORDS
Addition words tell you that the writers thought is going to
continue in the same direction. He is going to add on more points or
details of the same kid. Addition words are typically used to signal
enumeration. Look over some addition words:
also, another, finally, first, first of all, for one thing, furthermore,
last of all, likewise, moreover, next and, second, the third reason.

CONTRAST WORDS
Contrast words signal a change in the direction of the writers
thought. They tell you that the author is pointing out a difference
between two subjects or statements.
-but, however, in contrast, yet, differ, difference, variation, still,
on the contrary, conversely, otherwise, on the other hand.
Illustration words tell you that an example or illustration will be given to
make an idea clear.
For example: to illustrate, specifically, once, for instance, such as

Cause and effect words signal that the author is going to describe
results or effects.
Examples: because, therefore, so that, cause, reason, effect, thus,
consequently, since, as a result, ifthen, result in

Comparison words signal that the author is pointing out a similarity


between the subjects. They tell you that the second idea is like the first one in
some way.
-like, likewise, just, equally, in like manner, in the same way, alike,
similarity, similarly, just as, as in a similar fashion.
First, Second, Next, Then and Finally Furthermore, Next to that, After that,
Moreover are signal words used to introduce the steps in a process or
sequence of events.
Direction: Form 4 groups. Each group will go to assigned corner. In every corner
there is an envelope containing instructions. Using signal words provide or
make instructions on how to make the following:
