Sizing of Interceptor

The document discusses sizing requirements for industrial interceptors and separators based on the Revised National Plumbing Code of the Philippines. It provides a design formula and criteria for sizing grease interceptors based on factors like the number of meals served during peak hours, waste flow rate per meal, retention time, and whether the kitchen is fully equipped commercial kitchen. It also provides an example problem demonstrating how to use the formula to calculate the required volume of a grease interceptor for a restaurant serving 100 meals during its peak hour.

SIZING OF INTERCEPTOR

(Based from the Revised Natl. Plumbing

Code of the Philippines)

ILDE B. DELORIA, RMP

INTRODUCTION

SECT. 1008 INDUSTRIAL INTERCEPTORS (CLARIFIERS)

AND SEPARATORS

SECT. 1008.1 When Required interceptors or clarifiers

(including grease, oil and sand interceptors, etc.) shall
be provided when, in the judgment of the Administrative
Authority, they are necessary for the proper handling of
liquid wastes containing grease, flammable wastes,
sand, solids, acid or alkaline substances, or other
ingredients harmful to the building drainage system, the
public or private sewer and sewage disposal system.
INTRODUCTION

Sect. B.9.1 When liquid wastes containing excessive

amounts of grease, garbage, flammable wastes, sand, or
other ingredients which may affect the operation of a
private sewage disposal system, an interceptor for such
wastes shall be installed (NPCP, 1999).

SAMPLE PROBLEM
A restaurant with fully-equipped commercial
kitchen operates 8 hours per day. During peak
hour, it serves a total of 100 meals. Determine
the volume of grease interceptor.

Given:
Fully-equipped comml. kitchen
No. of meals/peak hr = 100
Operating hours = 8
Solution:
Vi = M x Q x T x S
where Vi = Interceptor size (liquid capacity)
Q = Waste flow rate
T = Retention time
S = Storage factor
Meals, M = 100 meals/h
Flowrate, Q from Table B-3 = 22.7 L/meal
Retention time, T = 2.5 h (comml. kitchen)
Storage factor, S = 1 (fully-equipped kit.)

Vi = (100 meal/h) (22.7 L/meal)(2.5h)(1)

Vi = 5675 L or 5.675 cu.m
