Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist born in 1818 who developed the theories of Marxism, socialism, and communism. He believed that capitalism inevitably leads to conflict between the bourgeoisie (the owners of capital) and the proletariat (workers), and that this conflict would lead to a socialist and eventually communist society without social classes. Some of Marx's key concepts were that capitalism relies on the exploitation of the working class, that workers are alienated from their labor under capitalism, and that there is an inherent class struggle between the bourgeoisie and proletariat. Marxism is the body of work developed by Marx analyzing history and society in terms of class struggle and economic determinism.
